Guys, please help. I got my new Galaxy S2 today. Tried to download the new firmware through Kies but the download froze and now my phone is without firmware. Recovery mode doesn't work.

I made a thread about this in the Three forum and been told there to ask in here.

I'm 99% convinced I didn't do anything wrong here, the phone is brand new and I just want to find a way to get it to work. I've been Googling all evening and seen various ways to root the phone and put new ROMs on it but I don't want to have to do that. I just want to get it working as it should have been working with the new firmware.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Just like to point out that you don't need to root your GS2 in order to put a ROM on it.

Just use odin and in 5 mins your done..

(really wish more people knew this)

not sure if this will work ...but if you hold the volume up button, power and centre button all togther until it comes up in clockwork mode, (can take 10 seconds) keep holing the buttons. perhaps you can doa reset , clear data, and then try rebooting. all else fails. put it in download mode and install a rom tru odin.

xda forum is great for their info on sgs2

    hope u get it sorted

I think he needs to have a custom kernel (containing clock work) to be able to actually use it ?

I am finding ICS a bit slower to react than Gingerbread on my phone. Camera can seem to take a bit longer to start first time, and Wheres my Water levels definitely take longer to load. Odd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 702 ✭✭✭wreckless

could be alright, ive only started messing around with roms, and stuff lately.

if thats the case, get odin and put CWM on your phone. then get CM9, its a beast of a rom

me too. I've noticed my s2 takes longer to start up and apps longer to load but my browser is faster. can't have it all I suppose

I think it felt slower on mine until I did a factory reset and now it fly's with no hint of hesitation or slowdown.
You can backup and reset now anyway in the new updated settings.

I find the battery is rubbish now :( have reset it in the hope of it helping but I doubt it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,325 ✭✭✭✭Dozen Wicked Words

Might give a reset a go then. The slowness is not too bad, just seemed strange a supposed upgrade seems not to be quite as good. Glad it's not just my imagination too!

i keep getting notifications that ive lost the connection due to roaming or something like that, never happened before ics. I'm with three.

Speaking of roaming, should i have it disabled, or national roaming or all networks??

Oh yeah, thats another annoyance I get as well, getting fed up with that little triangle now. I thought it had to be national roaming for the times we end up on the Vodafone network when 3's half a dozen masts aren't in range?

3 are the only network with a wierd domestic roaming setup. They will not help you fix any "3g dropping" network problems if you are running a non-3-official rom. They will also not help you anyway even if you are running an official rom :pac:

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056079085&page=29 - one of many threads. As you have just discovered it isn't an iphone only problem.

actually, flashed the newer CM9 codeworks rom, and the signal seems to be holding steady now all night...

heres hoping they can sort the camera recording issue, perfect rom then.

aii, it seems as if when i turn on my wifi, the network will drop the 3G coverage it will roam to vodafone/3 as the network and the data roaming warning comes up. now if have the wifi off and search from 3, it has held the 3g all morning now and again even H appearing too.

    are u still getting problems?

yeah, I live in a poor signal area for all networks so they do drop at times but never had the warning triangle before I updated. Its more an irritant than a major thing but still

Hmmm, not sure what's going on here but I had trouble getting the phone connected to my laptop, once it did connect it downloaded the firmware update, now the phone has a message on it saying downloading and don't turn off but it's been there for ages now. Meanwhile Kies has said it's not connected to the phone anymore. I think something has gone wrong :(

That's EXACTLY what happened to mine.

Are 3 the only Irish network to have the ICS update so far?

I have a HTC Sensation XE on O2 and have been told that the update is "a few weeks away" which I find very disappointing.

BTW does anyone know if Sense is going to be upgraded from 3.0/3.5 to 4.0 along with the ICS update?

Despite some great help from some Boardsies I decided to take it to Fonemenders. Should be picking it up tomorrow evening. Apparently it's quite common.

IME there are a few things you need to do, and to understand, to get the most out of the Three network.

It sounds like ICS is reverting to 2G coverage wherever possible, possibly to save battery life, while in stand-by mode. Normally this is pretty seamless, but with the Vodafone/3 relationship this is a bit more complicated, of course.

    1) Turn NATIONAL Roaming ON - this will allow you to data roam on Irish networks (i.e. Vodafone), but not other networks.

There is a seeing (or at least was on GB) which allows you to specify HSPA network preference. That is to say the phone will always connect to a 3g network when available, I found this excellent on the SGS II running GB, it used to cling to the 3 3G network for dear life. I can't say I noticed any unusual battery drain. Hopefully this will solve some issues you may be having.

I just turned the phone off and tried again and it worked, running ICS now.

Will try this and revert back, thought national roaming (using data)was not possible with Vodafone (3 Contract) and only allowed calls when the 3 signal was poor.

some 3G issues can be solved by removing the battery, sim and waiting about a minute, then rebooting.

Yeah you gotta do that every 5 minutes on 3, that's what many people are complaining about :D Toggling airplane mode is a lot quicker btw.

    You could try this
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and press phone information scroll down and at "set preferred network type" make sure WCDMA Preferred is set This helped on mine to hold onto 3g.

    Fair play to ya!

Tried this last night, travelled as far south as Waterford today, currently at Dublin airport, and have rarely lost 3G signal/H+ signal all day!

How come the tech's in 3 'Customer support' cant give this advice?

Finally, seem to have a continuous 3G connection!
