This is kind of a peculiar one... Recently, (I think about a week ago) I havnt been able to connect to the internet via my netgear router which I bought so I could play xbox live because my modem signal strength wasnt strong enough to reach my gaming room... It is a wireless N router. Well anyway recently for some reason the router wont connect to the internet. My laptop can see the netgear router and the modem, and I can connect to the router but it says limited connectivity which basically means I cant connect to the internet on the router. However I have no such problems using the modem to connect. I cant use the modem to connect to xbox live because the connection drops every so often with it

Any ideas/possible solutions would be much appreciated:D

Ps: the modem is zyxel if that matters

What exactly is the setup you have? What you need to do in a nutshell is have one wifi network (ie the Netgear one) and connect to this. You also need to plug the modem into the router WAN port with an ethernet cable and disable wifi on the modem. You need to make sure the router is setup to use the internet through the modem properly. An easy option is to setup the router to automatically get an IP address from the modem and the internet should work then. You'll end up with in effect 2 routers then though so ideally you need to set the modem to bridge mode and login into your internet service through the router.

What type of internet have you and what modem? What modem netgear router did you get?

Thanks, for replying. My internet service provider is Vodafone, having recently switched to them from eircom. My modem is http://www.google.ie/imgres?q=perlico+router&hl=en&safe=off&sa=X&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnsfd&tbnid=hs1_bCODCO7TzM:&imgrefurl=http://www.adverts.ie/mobile-broadband/perlico-wireless-router/739659&docid=X5RP-hkiZABsTM&imgurl=http://c0.dmlimg.com/1fc1c1c2db5852e08ffc380475e26336dc33c66eefd7db818cb244399ccac36f.jpg&w=392&h=294&ei=4WtuT5z-Aoe4hAfkxtSeBw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=822&vpy=306&dur=1018&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=142&ty=129&sig=117302997217359724252&page=1&tbnh=144&tbnw=214&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:0&biw=1262&bih=649 and my router is http://www.google.ie/imgres?q=netgear+n3500&hl=en&safe=off&sa=X&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnsfd&tbnid=zxVq0RfxZwnUPM:&imgrefurl=http://www.geekextreme.com/hardware/netgear-wnr3500-with-linux-on-board-8953&docid=Z-kJ4WYrmtKT8M&imgurl=http://www.geekextreme.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Netgear-wnr3500l-540x717.jpg&w=540&h=717&ei=RGtuT_HJGcqGhQef25WIBw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=513&vpy=123&dur=1790&hovh=259&hovw=195&tx=107&ty=79&sig=117302997217359724252&page=1&tbnh=147&tbnw=111&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0&biw=1262&bih=649 its a " n " router as far as im aware if that matters

Do you have a static IP setup on any of your computers / xbox?

Is the modem only a mode or is it also a router? if latter is the modem set to a bridging mode?

Is the router configured with the corect settings?

Pretty sure the xbox has a static ip. Also, the modem functioned as a wireless router before I got the netgear router. I dont believe the modem is set to bridging mode, and tbh I dont know how/what that really means. As for is the router configured correctly, I cant access the homepgage of the router to change settings, can I, as the router wont allow internet connection?

Obviously I'm a bit of a tech retard

For a start did you plug an ethernet (looks like a phone cable with a bigger connection on the end) from you Modem to the "WAN" port of your router? That's step 1 anyway. The internet should then work when you connect to the wifi of your new router. Once you have that sorted you can go about setting up the modem properly etc.

Btw you can access the router homepage by connecting to it's wifi or plugging an ethernet cable from your computer directly to the router. Then go to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 . I think the login default is "admin" for the username and "password" for the password but that info should come with the router.

This is starting to really annoy me now. I have the ethernet cable plugged into the modem from the router but still no dice. As I said, the laptop sees the router, connects to it, but then says " unidentified network, no network access "

I'm assuming the netgear router control panel is similar to my netgear.

    Here's the plan:

-Leave the Zyxel on all current settings
-If you can find DMZ settings for the Zyxel, enter the ip 192.168.1.2 (assuming the ip of it is 192.168.1.1? If it's 192.168.0.1 then use 192.168.0.2)

-Log connect to the netgear wireless signal
-You don't need internet access to access the routers control panel, it should be 192.168.1.1 also.
-On the LAN Settings page set the LAN TCP/IP Setup settings to the following:

IP 192.168.1.2 (or .0.2 depending as mentioned earlier)
    Gateway: 255.255.255.0

Also uncheck the Use router as DHCP server

-Be sure to apply all settings

Disconnect from netgear and zyxel, the switch them off at the wall for 60 seconds. Reboot zyxel first, then netgear, and the connect to netgear and test for internets.

The router probably needs to be logged into to do a one time configuration, it is a router not a switch meaning some settings need attention.
