My parents have elected me to sort out digital tv for them. They have a Bush LCD26TV005HD HD ready tv.at the moment they have an ariel pointing to Northern Ireland which gives them the English channels and an Ariel for RTE.

Do I need to buy an upgraded ariel(RTE on is Knackered anyway) for digital or what is the story?I have freesat myself so know nothing about ariels.

What part of the country are we dealing with here? Do your parents only have the RTE analogue channels or do they also have TV3 or TG4?

They are in Cavan. As far as I know they have TV3 and TG4.

Most of Co. Cavan is covered by the Cairn Hill transmitter, see the Saorview coverage checker.

Cairn Hill is an all-UHF transmitter for analogue & the same aerial will be fine for Saorview.

Do you know if the tv can decode Saorview? Maybe you get sound & no picture?

Thanks for the replies Peter. The tv has just the standard RTE signal,it is about 4 years old and has never been tried for tuning into digital signals.Suppose my first call would be to see if I can tune it into the digital signal. My brother has the digital signals from cairn which gives him the RTEs including the news channel in perfect quality but his is a year old tv.Will be up there tomorrow so will check.Probably have to sort out the BBC and UTV for them as well.looks like that is from the Belcoo transmitter.

In that part of Cavan, Truskmore (Sligo) could be a better option than Cairn Hill. They may already be receiving from there.

Cairn Hill & Belcoo won't work in combination as they will share UHF channels for digital broadcasts (currently Belcoo channel 4 & Cairn Hill Saorview are on UHF channel 47).

That part of the country must be pretty much blocked from Cairn Hill by mountains, otherwise they couldn't use the same frequencies at Belcoo (which has been given a generous output relative to analogue, probably to fend off CCI).

Not really, there is a whole "valley" as such going down through from belcoo to cairn through Swanlinbar/Ballyconnell through Leitrim onto Longford.
Parents are on two seperate aerials but Belcoo would never be intended to be picked up south of the border so would think they dont care about interference issues as such.

Cairn Hill would wipe out Belcoo though, if its signal was present at any appreciable level in Belcoo's intended service area.

It's probably already interfering with your parents' analogue channel 4 reception.

There will be no digital broadcast from Belcoo until the 1st stage of switchover in NI on October 10th.

Basically if you have TV3 you are plug and play for saorview.

Not in this case, if Saorview is from Cairn Hill. Did you not read the rest of the thread?

Went up at the weekend and replaced the ariel. There are no digital channels showing up on a scan so I will have to get a set top box.Would anyone happen to know is there a box suitable for for both North and south digital. Both aeriels feed into a box on the mast and then one co-axial down to the tv.

Peter. They are definitely on Cairn hill and 99% certain its Belcoo from the North and they have perfect Channel 4!

Basically if you have TV3 you are plug and play for saorview.

Sponge Bob I have no idea what you mean by this. They do have tv3.

That isn't possible, they must be receiving a different northern transmitter.

What he means is if they can pick up TV 3 from their existing aerial, they do not need to change the aerial. An aerial which can pick up the analogue version of TV 3, is good for saorview, provided the TV cane tune in Saorview, which in your case it can't.

There are plenty more-qualified posters here than me who can advise on a box thats suitable for North & South, but, at a very minimum, you should be looking for a Freeview HD box.

Any Saorview approved box will also decode the standard definition UK channels. Indeed, I would think your parents' existing tv would have a tuner capable of SD Freeview reception.

Freeview HD requires a different tuner & most work with Saorview, but only by default rather than design.

Could be Brougher Mtn. itself, if they have a view of it. We'll only know if the OP supplies a list of the UHF channel nos. or frequencies.

Not likely to be using Cairn Hill & Belcoo in combination as they use adjacent channels for analogue.

It would probably work ok if you kept both aerial systems separate, maybe with a switch or 2 output plate at the tv. The txs are in different directions & polarity.

Not the case here though . . .

Yes, audio and no video would indicate a non compatible TV.
