(There was a thread with this title but it was closed, is it ok to start a new one...?)

Anyway, I got a P21 today telling me to forward a cheque to the revenue for...Euro800+...

I only worked about 6 months in 2011 and got a tax refund of nearly Euro400 a few weeks ago. I'm a PAYE worker, all my tax is deducted at source, I don't get it. This has never happened to me before, anyone in the same position...?

What tax year is it from? Did you request the P21 that came showing the underpayment? Were you getting Jobseekers benefit?

It's for 2011, I didn't request it but I claimed my tax credits for 2011 back around the end of January, I'm currently claiming JSBand was also claiming JSB for about 6 months on and off for 2011...

The P21 is the result of claiming the credits for 2011. Check the P21 to make sure everything is correct. Does the pay and tax match your p45s and or p60s for last year? Are all your employments on it? Make sure the JSB figure on it is the correct figure. You can do this by getting a statement from the DSP. Make sure all your credits are listed.

If you are satisfied that it is correct then contact your local PAYE area to request that the underpayment be covered by reducing tour tax credits over the next few years. This means you don't have to pay the underpayment up front.
