Dog attacks police officers in east London – video

Five police officers have been taken to hospital after being mauled by a 'pitbull-type' dog while attempting to arrest a man in east London. A dog unit and firearms officer were called to the scene before the dog was shot dead.

One officer is facing skin grafts and three others are understood to be in a serious condition after chaos ensued during a morning swoop in Albert Square, Newham

    Warning: contains disturbing images

Good thing he didn't throw the dog into one of the wheelie bins.

Remember the outcry the last time that happened?

Maybe time to give officers a bit of training on dealing with an attacking dog. The officer understandably panicked, but that caused him to make a number of errors in dealing with it.

Stick yer finger up his bum.

Wonder how bored the first guy to discover that was?

I dont know what its like to be attacked so badly by a dog but of all the videos I see the people being attacked, they dont seem to put up much resistance.
If that was me I think I would be stomping and laying kicks into the dog (I strongly dislike animal abuse but in such a situation it can be deemed neccessary).

The officer who jumped on the wall was not much use to his collegue who was being attacked...
would the pepper spray not be effective?

Or a few strikes with the ASP? Or get the fire extinguisher from the car?

Suppose its easy to think of what to do from the safety of your laptop!

True point and maybe the officer on the wall had already been attacked, Hopefully they will make a full and quick recovery.

I have found a huge disability many people have in dealing with dogs is that so many people are terrified of dogs, and this can make the situation a lot worse.

From the vantage of the keyboard warrior watching highly edited clips.

    Looks like a couple failings.
Wouldn't be overly happy with my mates running away,
    why were 3 shots fired?
Why did they not know there was a dog?
Given this was a planned raid where was the PPE

Do people get any training in how to deal with dogs?

again, looking at an edited video clip from my computer ..

the police officer who jumped up on the wall is a disgrace.
why the hell did the police guy getting attached not beat the dog with his baton?

I have only encountered peper spray used once on an attacking/defending dog. It had little effect on him he did a lot of licking but cant say what it would be like on other dogs.
Was in the vacinity recently of a rodhesian ridgeback who was shot because he was worring livestock. The farmhand couldn't believe after the first shot gun blast hit the dog actually charged him.

I work with dogs for a couple of local authorities and hate when the local station calls as its 99% sure to be an off the wall case like this morning one made the news as a danger to traffic on the m6. ps. Dog back with owners by the way.
Or last year for me man found deceased in own home and his dog starving in same house for a coup[le of weeks. He was going ape this dog but muggings here had to go in and get him solo with two finger loads of vicks up my nostrils.
Best defence is prior warning. I can give good tips for this senario if anyone is interested but when one is surprised its drifferant especially if been bitten is imminent. Use your batton if you have one and speed is more important that considering where to strike it in my experience.

If your working with someone help them, sounds logical but fight or flight can be differant when dealing with a very agressive dog I am still terrified of aspects of my work so my ppe is always uppermost in my mind. If someone let me down and I got badly bitten I honestly couldn't work closely with them again.

Ultimately its the fault of the guy being arrested for having an illegal dog. That could just as easily have been a child who wandered into the garden!

Why didn't the owner help get the dog off him the other officer didn't help either.

As far as I know, them type of dogs have lock jaw so once there on there on.

This typical **** that gives them a bad name, there good dogs in the right hands it's when they get in the wrong hands this type of **** happens.

Shot three times or not, that dog was sentenced to death as soon as he locked onto this arm.

There's no such thing. They do have very strong jaws though and very tough heads so it can be hard to convince them to release something they've grabbed a hold of.
The best tactic is to not put any part of your body near a dog's mouth and if at all possible get it to grab something which is tough but not part of your body, like a jacket, which you can then shed.

More of the attack here... tbh its awful viewing, and listening to the poor policemans panic isn't nice..

From the moment the clip starts you see one cop bottle it and walk away from his buddy, I'd guess it'll be a long time before anyone places any trust in him again.

I'm the owner of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a Pitbull btw.

They do not have 'lock jaw' however they are tenacious, fearless feckers. And strong, very strong.

The cop panicked, which didn't help but most of us would too (me included).

If this was a morning raid on a house I'm guessing the owner of the dog is a scumbag and probably rared the dog to be aggressive, a weapon.. However most dogs will become aggressive if you threaten their owner or territory.

Good call on the cop shooting the dog.

    Hey, lets get real here.
If Someone came beating down my door id be delighted my dog came to the rescue. Ok this time it was a cop, but we dont know what way he was accosting the owner either!
If someone came onto my property in a threatening manner id be delighted my dog attacked rather tahn me getting attacked/stabbed/whatever in my own home!!
This man was probably a troublemaker, im not defending him by the way. But the dog was doing what any loyal pet/parent/partner/friend would do if someone closde to them was being harassed, messed with, they would defend!

If it was a normal dog I would agree with you but these dogs are illegal for a reason!

If you own an unregistered banned dog you are committing a criminal offence.
    Index of Exempted Dogs

Your dog can only be added to the Index of Exempted Dogs (IED) following a court order.
Conditions of being on the IED

If your dog is put on the IED, it will have to be:
    • neutered
    • tattooed
    • microchipped
    • kept on a lead and muzzled at all times when in a public place
    • kept in a secure place so it can't escape
    • insured against injuring third parties
You'll have to pay for this.
    As the owner, you must:
    • take out insurance against your dog injuring other people
    • be over the age of 16 to own or be in charge of the dog
    • show the Certificate of Exemption when asked by a police officer or local council warden, either at the time or within five days
    • let the IED know if you change address, or your dog dies
The Certificate of Exemption is valid for the life of the dog - as long as the above conditions are met.
I think its fair to assume that this dog was not exempt from the ban.

We dont knpw if the guys dog was legally or illegally owned. Seen as were ok with shooting dogs for defending their owners maybe we should all become trigger happy and start shooting every punk causes trouble!! Humans are so much worse than dogs, so much worse! The dog was doing something that was innate in it.
This was a PLANNED raid, what kinda planning went into this? Obviously the guy who planned it didnt give a fcuk about his colleagues welfare seen as it seemed a surprise that there was a dog there!
I do feel so sorry for the cop that he was left on his own by the others, what p.i.ks like. They should be stripped of their badges for that kind of carryon. These people are there to protect/help and defend, but they watched their friend be bitten numerous times.
    Shame on those b.sta.ds!!

Wow that was awful, hope the owner of the dog got what was coming to him, he should be charged with the officers injuries.

Found out the dog was called "kitten"
Id be p....ed off too with a name like that. Cop called him pussy by accident which was real reason for the attack. Costly mistake old bill.
