Just spotted a new Garda car this morning, shiny new "Silver" Avensis.

Are they starting to move away from white? I presume were now going to have to keep the eyes peeled for Silver & White cars.

Yup new Garda cars in my area anyway are silver rather than white.

Makes them easier to re-sell I guess?

New traffic corp are silver alright. Haven't seen any of the squads in silver so I dunno. Definitely a bit trickier to see, especially at night.

I was actually going to say the opposite to be honest. Its the yellow stickers I see, not the base color, and to me the yellow stickers are more obvious against the silver than they are against the white background.

With the mileage all of these cars do, I'm sure they are probably worthless by time they are sold.

Coming head on I think they're harder to see but from the sides and rear they're spotted easy enough alright.

All that 2nd gear revving and tyre scrabbing as they make their away along residential streets doesn't help either

Theyre traffic corps, it was dicussed a while ago in the emergency services forum, as far as I remember its simply because toyota were able to supply them quicker in silver.

Good to see that Toyota consider that the customer is always right .. you can have as many Avensis's as you can buy so long as they are in silver..

I assume the Gardai were told it would be quicker to supply silver, but could have white if they were willing to wait.

The silver looks better anyway, all new garda cars should be silver imho. Anyway the new avensis is totally unfit for purpose and completely underpowered (standard patrol car, traffic car is more powerful).

Not wanting to stray too far off topic but is that a problem? I was under the impression, Gardai are not really promoted to chase IIRC so why would they need a lot of power?

Locals squad cars are silver as well. My local village has a silver 11 Avensis.

That would be really tough to spot from a rear view mirror at night time. IMG source - Wikipedia

Im not really sure, I'm not a guard, I'm just going from what I've heard. Whether they are discouraged from chases or not, I'd imagine there are situations where a chase would be unavoidable.

A lot (if not all) the UK switched from white to silver a decade ago, so I'd say there's more to it than Toyota Ireland colour availability problems.

So basically if you see a garda car, put the shoe in and you'll be grand yeah? :pac::D

They've had the silver yokes for some time now...

If they don't need a lot of power, why are there T5 Volvos and V6 mondeos then?

Or the unmarked high power BMWs and volvos?

I think some of those vehicles are used by the ARU (Armed Response Unit) so safer rapid response capability might be a requirement.

    Break for the border!

Just remember a Garda telling me they generally don't Chase as it isn't really wanted from the powers above.

Id gladly buy an ex-cop car.Best looked after cars on the road. Some of them are serviced every 8 weeks depending on the mileage.Every 160k they get a complete suspension rebuild front and rear--4 new shocks + shock mounts,springs,2 wishbones,4 drop links, all bushes and all associated parts.New steering rack, track rod ends, new engine mounts etc.Theyre like a new car after that.

Might have to fix the holes in the dash/body where the equipment was mounted though :D
