06 punto replacement?

    Bit of advice:

We have a 06 Punto, 160k on it, having trouble with it now but would like to flog it and get something to replace it.

The wife does a fair amount of miles so economy would be handy and cost as usual would be needed to be kept low.

What are we looking at getting for the Punto, either trade in or private?

What are good options for commuting and being as cost effective as possible.

    Thanks

what's your price range? average mileage?

Average miles would be around 200-250 a week

price range, not too sure really, it would depend on what we could get for the Punto, say 2-3... maybe 4 grand.

    What's wrong with it?

I've seen Grande Punto's with decent mileage appear from around €3.5K. If yours is the older model Punto (and if it needs work) then that will reflect in a significantly lower value.

It has over heated previously and had a few things replaced, water pump thermostat. Since then it has been slow to start in the mornings and seems to miss fire at times... then last night it just would not start at all, ticks over but wont idle just keep trying to get going but won't.

I'm presuming the 160k on it is taking it's toll and we'll need to get rid of...

it's the new style Punto Grand, 3 door.

Don't think you'll get much for it tbh, sounds like the headgasket is failing. Pity, they're nice cars.

We had all of that checked out and I would of presumed the same but the garage did all the stress tests on it and said it was fine.

So in essence, is it worth struggling on with it, getting it repaired again... or do I trade it in and try get something with a little less wear and tear... if the latter , any advice?

    Thanks

It depends what's wrong. If you're in Dublin I recommend Atlas in Drumcondra to reliably tell you what's wrong.
