not a big horror fan, but this looks like it could be one to go see, hard to think of a better place to set a horror :D

    Needs more S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The setting is good, but this looks like it's going to be "ZOMG MUTANTS! IN EASTERN EUROPE! RADIATION MUTANTS!". Coming from the creator of Paranormal Activity puts me off, in that I strongly suspect it won't be the sort of horror film I gravitate towards.

And yes, the potential for either S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Metro 2033 as a tense and suspenseful horror film is very high indeed. Sadly, only Uwe Boll seems to see any potential in film adaptations of videogames and we all know how those turn out :( (I watched Alone In The Dark recently on Netflix, because "how bad could it be?" Turns out the answer was "So bad they cast Tara Reid as a scientist")

That looks terrible, though it could just be the editing of the trailer at fault. If it actually does represent the final product, then it looks like they're going for a dull series of jump-scares & generic shaky-camera tricks. Pretty lazy when you consider the natural creep-horror potential in the setting. It takes some doing if they manage to waste the location.

I would also throw a hand up in favour of STALKER; a genuinely unnerving & creepy experience; where a sense of loneliness, decay and isolation is continuous & palpable. A helluva feat for a video game.

I'll say this for Chernobyl Diaries - seeing the trailer reminded my other half of The Door (an Irish-made short film from 2008), and led to me finding out that it's available to watch on the Irish Film Board website.

Is it just me or does the idea of this film seem pretty scummy?

Well it doesn't help that the lead characters appear to be typical American douchebag tourists you get in this genre, kinda lowers the tone. That and the fact I want to kill the characters, nevermind the mutants :)

Yep, this is bound to piss some people off. It's an exploitation film, if ever there was one, and if you think it's in extremely poor taste, you're right, though there have been countless exploitation films over the years, just look at Inglor (looks to imdb) inglourious basterds. Nobody really complained about that, though the Chernobyl disaster was a much more recent event and I suspect this film will get a lot of flack.

I can never see Pripyat and not assume theres a sniper spot looking at that hotel

Exploitative or not, there are real tours like this available in the area, and have been for some time. Know a couple of lads who went.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

its not exploitative, everyone knows eastern europe is full of weirdos and mutants and guys who will kidnap you and let rich americans kill you for a price.

Given that there a not inconsiderable number of cancer-related deaths after the incident, the radiation mutant aspect is the problem. Not to mention that it's a lazy cliche that could have easily been replaced with an alternative less stupid idea (eg criminal gang hiding out there/smugglers of some sort routing through there).

But where do you draw the line over what is acceptable in a film and what is not? It could be argued that the Final Destination films are equally as offensive given how people die in freak accidents all the time.

    Really?

You're seriously going to use the example of the film series that, from the first film, gave us such believable accidents as a stealth-bus speeding at more tha 50mph out of what we've just been shown is a dead end, or a gymnast having some sort of full-body implosion, or non-consensual shower-curtain/autoerotic asphyxiation, as an example of "what about this"?

Are you honestly trying to tell me that because said films exist, there can be nothing questionable about a film that is apparently using the Chernobyl disaster as an excuse to have some sort of mutants running around killing people in what looks set to be yet another iteration of clichéd crap?

The setting could easily be used to fantastic effect - the opening of the short I linked to upthread shows this. Nothing about the trailer we've seen suggests the film-makers plan to do this, which is a crying shame. Instead we'll just get yet another crappy jump-scare piece of nonsense.

I wasn't being serious. It was something that a known troll on these boards said awhile back when discussing the Final Destination films.

As for the questionable nature of this film, well sure there is a manner in which the film makers could have used the unique setting and created something original but you have to remember that this a film written by the guys behind Titanic II, Paranormal Entity and The Day the Earth Stopped. You then have it picked up by Oren Peli who is for all intents and purposes a one trick pony who has big smash hit film was nothing more than a retread of old ideas.

I honestly thought you were joking with this but a quick search on IMDb proves me wrong. This film's going to be awful

They are Dick Van Dyke's grandsons and have been actively involved with the Asylum which is the cinematic equivalent of that piece of dog shit one finds at the bottom of their shoe, for quite some time.

the way that they make out that it is an abandoned area whereas in real life there are about 700 people living in that area

Not to mention a burgeoning eco-system; I believe it's practically a national preserve at this stage, as the local Ukrainian wildlife has simply move back into the areas abandoned. Dead the region most certainly isn't.

What I like about boards is that, despite the film in question being almost guaranteed to be arsegravy of the highest concentration, through this thread I still learned something interesting :D

I saw it on Friday, it's a decent movie with some good tense moments.

I caught it last week and enjoyed it. Not the horrible horror I was expecting and I enjoyed the ending, didn't feel cheated.

Another funny thing is that the only spike in cancers in Chernobyl since the disaster is in thyroid cancer if i'm aware. There hasnt been the damage as portrayed. This film is a fraud

It's a movie about mutants. It's hardly going to be fully accurate ...

Looks like another Hills have eyes to me but in an urban setting, I'll give this a go.
