Im just curious as to why some ads on done deal scratch out the number plate?
Is this to stop a car check for mileage etc?
Always put me off certain cars on there....
Im probably way off the mark tho!

Some people don't want their numberplates being cloned. I'd do it if I had an ad online. Nothig stopping a genuine buyer doing a check if they come to view the car.

Or blank out the reg. plate on one or two of the photos, then take a few more and forget to take the brush to those as well!

No I meant paranoia on behalf of those who blank out the info

If I cant check the number plate online it makes things difficult

Usually done by people who think they know something that the rest of us don't.
Bit of a generalisation, but normally done by the people who you wouldn't want to buy a car from anyway (or their gullible friends).
Have a look at Carzone.ie.....all of the (up front) dealers don't feel the need to hide the car's reg.
Apart from that, if I want to clone a blue Mondeo or a silver 320 or a red Focus I am perfectly capable of walking around town for a few minutes until I spot what i want to clone.

Gotta love the chavs that stick a tea-towel over the regs :pac:

As a rule though, if you're in contact with the seller, if he won't tell you the reg for you to do your own checks, walk away from that car.....

And first thing when you call to look at the car, ask to see the registration cert. If he's a dealer or 'selling it for a friend' (same thing), chances are that he won't have it on him or there's somethng on the cert (like that it's an import) that he doesn't want you to see. Another reason to walk before wasting your money paying a mechanic to look it over.

    ^^^That.
If there where two ads, one with reg and the other with reg blanked out, I'd go for the one displaying the reg.
And the most important point to me is that the explanation of "I don't want my car cloned" rings a bit hollow, otherwise they'd have to drive everywhere with their reg hidden under a teatowel.
If I want to buy a car, I want to know the make, model, engine size, year, fuel type, mileage, tax, NCT and reg.
If any of the above is unavailable due to (insert excuse here), it's fishy. or simple cute-hoorism.

Personally I have no issue with some blanking out the number of a car they may not want neighbours or work collegues knowing they are selling there car and what they are looking for it. Alright there are some cute hoors around but if you are buying a car in a private sale it is buyer beware.
I get more annoyed when someone will not put up the milage or engine size on done deal or tells you a 02 Hyundai Accent will do 45mpg or puts a unrealistic price on a car because they have spend 2000 euro on it or put no NCT detail on it. If somebody blanks out the car number and puts up milage NCT details etc and the price is right I give a ring and suss it out you learn a lot from a phone call.

I guess it is a case of people either not knowing a thing about car sales or people just chancing their arm in the hope that 45mpg will sell the horrid gold Accent they've put up for sale!
As for the blanking of number plates it's just very strange to me. If you are that concerned about cloning do you drive around with your plates in the boot just in case?

I don't think I would bother blanking out a reg plate to to be honest, sure if they want your reg they can take it down when your parked in Tesco doing your shopping....
