Just wondering about the following - I bought an 08 car last May and taxed it for the year. The car is due to be taxed again this May but I want to know about the NCT, do I ring the NCT up to book the car in or will notice come to me when the tax info arrives as to when the NCT is due. The car has never had an NCT:)

No notice comes as far as I can remember.

You just go to the website - click on booking - pick your preferred test centre and choose an available slot that suits.

You can also read the Faq.

You wont get a notice - you need to book it yourself.
As briant said, visit the website

It will be due on the 4th anniversery of the date of the car's first registration (no matter which country that was in) but because it is the first NCT it can be done 6 months prior it's due date and you will get a cert upto it's next due date. You can check the date of first registration on the car's logbook (VLC). Notices are no longer sent out, it is the responsibility of the registered owner to book it if due. Also be aware that the test is €55 since 1st Feb.

Mine is 08 too and was first registered in the UK on 2nd September, however I got a cancelation about 2 weeks ago and now it doesn't need to be done until Sept 2014.

I got a notice for my 06 there in December (as I did in 2010 when it was first due) so they do still seem to be sending them out some of the time anyway?

Same as. Mines due at the end of April, and got a notice in the post about 6 weeks ago.
