Was this substandard work or am I being too picky?

Am literally just back from the dentist having gotten an examination and a "scale and polish"...firstly I use the term examination loosely as he perused my 32 teeth for all of 20 seconds before deeming them ok (also only one free checkup a year through PRSI)...after the cleaning I had to point out several pieces of black tarter in between the front of my teeth which he hadn't bothered removing but did after I showed them to him (some which I didn't notice at the time, are still there 45 euros later)..also he only removed the tarter from the front teeth and hardly went beyond my canines so now I still have great big dirty chunks of tarter in the gumline of several of my back teeth...am I right in saying that this is substandard work and perhaps his qualifications were printed from the internet or is a "scale and polish" just that... with no tarter removal???Any dentists out there who can clarify what a scale and polish involves and should I therefore be seeking a new dentist???Or anyone with similar issues with their treatment and what actions they took.....

Op did you get this work done in a chain? Please don't mention any names.

that's very cheap for a scale and polish, i can only imagine it's that price for a reason, and you found that out.

I had a scale and polish done by one of the larger well know chains last year, cost €60 and was a total waste of time, I could feel the difference when I went to an independant dentist a few months later.

Price doesn't necessarily dictate how good a dentists work is. More rural dentists would be quite cheap. I pay €50 for an exam and scale and polish and the dentist is very thorough.

OP, your first port of call is back to the dentist. Say that you feel that your teeth are still not "clean" and that you can still see a build up of tartar and calculus.

Clarify that you would like them to do a more thorough job with no additional charge. If they won't, then go to a different dentist and get their professional opinion. If they think the work was not sufficient ( and I wouldn't get into naming names or making accusations), then you can make a complaint against the original dentist http://www.healthcomplaints.ie/specific-complaints-procedures/dental-council/
