Just took delivery of a gigabit switch so am in the process of connecting all my network devices via cat 6 - but need some long ones (2 will be at least 70m), any suggestions on where to get them?

Any computer shop worth their salt will make them for you. Some electricians do them as well.

Or order 2 100m drums, network pliers and a bag of connectors and DIY, should be around €150.

ditto. you'll most likely end up paying over the odds for lengths.

i did a bit of digging around last summer and these were the prices i was quoted for 305m boxes.
    Eurosales - CAT5e €68+VAT, CAT6 €123+VAT with free delivery in Dublin

ND Electrical - CAT5e €52+VAT, CAT6 €95+VAT, next day delivery is free in Dublin.

CEF - CAT5e €62.77 inc. VAT, no price for CAT6

Michael Garry - CAT5e €60+VAT, CAT6 €90+VAT, only delivery if paid in advance or COD (maybe, he wasn't sure), no payment over phone

    CEW (couldn't find them, but there's a CWE, Clonee wholesale electrical) - CAT5e €65 +VAT, CAT6 - €110 +VAT free delivery in Dublin.

    Kedington - CAT5e = €49.50+VAT, CAT6 €79+VAT with €7.50 overnight delivery

prices may well have changed since, but it'll give you an idea of what's available.

you can buy a box of cable, a crimper and boots and aside from the extra time it would take, you'll most likely be in profit over buying pre-cut lengths.

I think Maplins will make cables for you in shop. I'm guessing it's expensive though.

how hard is it to do the "crimping" yourself? I'm assuming they have to wired a certain way left to right colour coded?

easy..unless you're colour blind or have terrible eyesight.:D

takes a few attempts to judge the length of the twisted pair going into an rj45 right but you'll be crimping away in no time.
