Work standards dropping?

I used to work in a restaurant. Shifts were max 10 hours. 10 hours = min 1 hour break + maybe a 30min break. 8 hours something similar. 4 hour shift, maybe a 15min break, even a sly 10. I never heard of split shifts (work 2 separate shifts in one day, could be 8 hours, a three hour break and then back to close for a few hours).

Now breaks seem to be getting halved and cut short. By the time you've gotten your lunch and sat down you've got 15mins to lash down whatever and get back on the floor. A 15min break is a thing of the past in a lot of places. Split shifts, where basically the job says "hmmmm, on this day, you belong to us", seem to be a growing trend. Is this something relatively new?

Split shifts are not uncommon in hospitality. A restaurant may do lunch service and then do a dinner service. They have no need for full staff in between and thus split the shift.
