Category c insurance write off car from uk?

Am thinking of bringing in a 2 year old car from the uk which is specified as a category c on the insurance register? It's still under warranty. I am awaiting a comprehensive inspection by the AA engineer. As expected it's price is very competitive, low mileage, excellent spec, looks to be in absolutely excellent condition. My question is would the cars warranty still be valid after such a write off if I buy it, based on the AA giving me the go ahead? Would there be any problem insuring it?

Thanks for the reply. If the car is less than 2 years old does it need to pass an nct? Thought it was ok until 3-4 yrs old?

It would want to be very cheap if its a Cat C.

NCT will he due 4 years after date of first registration.

Will the car still be covered under warranty I wonder? It's a BMW by the way

I wouldn't "imagine" so.... but I don't know the warranty. What wrote it off OP?

The owner tells me that it was an act of vandalism, not a crash. I'm dubious that an act of vandalism could cause enough damage to make it a category C. The engineer is checking it tomorrow morning and reporting back to me. I spoke to him this evening and explained this to him, just to alert him to it. Inspection list seems very thorough

I was reading through the small print on a car warranty recently (I think it was Toyota), and it specifically excluded cars that had been written off.

Personally I'd go ahead with the purchase if (a) it was very very cheap, (b) it was well repaired and (c) if I was prepared to keep it a long time. By very very cheap I'd be thinking about 70%, no more than 80%, of the best price I could get same car at in an auction / private sale (ie not 80% of the main dealer price).

I'd not be spending my monies until I knew what had happened, engineer or none.

In less than 60 to 120 minutes he could have a letter in his e-mail inbox from his insurer stating why the vehicle was written off.... Even better, he could ask them for a copy of the engineers report that wrote off the vehicle if they would be so kind.

Remember, that when that car was written off then it was owned by the Insurer. He would have had to buy it back off them..... Begs the question, why did he buy back a car he is now selling on.....

No. The do an initial inspection, which in my case in January, amounted to the woman looking at the Vin number and checking the mileage.

If it's had a VOSA inspection it should be ok.

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/aboutvosa/whatwedo/whatwedo.htm#P8_1314

Even then it'd need to be maybe 35% cheaper than market.

Not sure if they check themselves by going to the VOSA site once you give them the V5 but I wasnt asked if it had a current MOT.

    following thread,
Pleas let us know what the Engineer says, If it's vandalism they would nearly have to get every single panel?

It has an up to date MOT but this could be from before the write off. It's a bodyshop that's selling. It is quite a bit below market price, but still a fair bit of cash for me

Wrote a brand new land cruiser off years back due to a corrosive substance on the roof.

One last question before I hit the hay, eagerly awaiting engineers report, if I purchase the car and bring it home, will I be able to pay vrt on a substantially reduced car value as its been written off or will they still seek the full open market selling price valuation vrt %??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭ANGEM

try the VRT calculator on revenues page supposed to be good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭Lambasted

Yeah I've done that but they don't ask for anything like that. It's just based on model, mileage, edition, age etc. maybe if I ring the office? Thanks though

Make sure he/she has a VIC!

edited: if not hold a buy and google yourself more about it! you wouldt able to get documents and clear it with vrt, it will take you at least 2 month or more to do that paper job and one trip to Lisburn for a check! make sure you know what you do. If you cant save 20%-10% of the car I wouldt bother to buy for a hassle!

Be prepared to pay and appeal. They don't give much discount for vehicle condition, including w/o status.

ask the seller for the MOT TEST Number from the current MOT CERT, and the car reg, then go to the direct gov website and look at the mot history......its free and good to do OP

I know I have this late, but we bought a 2010 car last summer (not from england) from a garage, told slight damage to the front side, "nothing to worry about". This car has given us trouble and the garage have fixed so far, but I only now have checked into the past and found out it was a category 3, not economically viable to fix. The thing is we payed them good money and I know now that they used second hand parts to fix it up, disgusted and stupid, sorry but hope yours worked out.
