3D laptops?

Gonna be in the market soon for a new laptop. It's going to be primarily for gaming and art type stuff. It can't be a Dell because they lock their BIOS' and I've had major major problem with nVidia cards like the 555M that have optimus.

I dont have a huge budget, would be about a grand, but if it had a 3D screen I could stretch a hundred more I guess.

Anybody know of good places to get 3D laptops online?

Check this thread, pretty much the same requirements and budget.

    I'm looking at this laptop

    http://ie.asus.com/Notebooks/Gaming_Powerhouse/G53SX/

But it doesn't appear to be available in the shop? How would be the best way I could buy from ASUS in Ireland?

FUUUUU I didn't think GTX cards had Optimus! It won't be an issue if ASUS dont lock their BIOS anyway.

Also it's not ugly, it looks batmans tumbler batmobile, which is awesome. Also, matte finish, no fingerprints!

How can I check if amazon will ship this to Ireland? They have an embargo on some stuff dont they. Isn't there a hack for that, like putting down a N.Irish post code?

    Do Amazon take Lazer?

They ship Laptops, if you see something from a seller that won't ship use www.deliverme.ie, I don't know about lazer, set up an account and try adding the card and see if they'll accept it.

    Uh oh.

Is there a list of cards that don't have optimus? The laptop I am thinking of buying comes with a GTX560M or GTX570M.

I think you'll be ok. I don't think cards that expensive come with Optimus.

I had a post here....must have deleted by accident, anyway both have Optimus!

You could try AMD, it has a similar system to Nivida but doesn't give near as much trouble.

You'll need to go for a 6990 to be comparable to the GTX560-570

Even the more expensive GTX cards have optimus? Jesus what a cluster ****... I guess my only option then is to go for a brand of laptop that allows me to turn it off at BIOS level? Do ASUS allow that? Is it something I would be able to turn off at BIOS level?

    Wishful thinking... :D

You can't disable Optimus, but all is not lost: you can force the NVIDIA GPU to run permanently. In the NVIDIA control panel open the Global Settings tab, select "High Performance NVIDIA Processor" from the Preferred Graphic Processor drop down menu.

Wishful thinking :D Already had a laptop with Optimus, that and many other options were tried; none worked. Especially with steam games.

I hear the ASUS' Im looking at dont have Optimus though.

How long ago did you have the laptop? From what I understand the problem with optimus was that Nivida just kinda stuck it out there without much notice, or waiting for develops to get behind it. As such most games did not have the proper drivers for it.

However slowly over the months patches have been released by game developers, some of them only recently (Shogun 2 finally fixed it 2 weeks ago), so I think the issue will have been resolved for the most part if not now, within a month or two. Certainly still not an ideal situation, but it really shouldn't put you off that much.

I would normally give AMD a look, except I do a bit of CUDA coding so I'm stuck with nVidia for a while.

Optimus was months old by the time I got that laptop, and that was last year... not acceptable in my opinion.

No it's not acceptable but there's no point wasting time and money if the issue has been largely resolved now. If you can find a good AMD deal then by all means purchase it, but as you can see right now there's not many options from them unfortunately.

I do a lot of 3D work unfortunately, so I would be using the GPU for rendering etc, and need PhysX etc. I hear those Asus' I'm looking at though don't actually have optimus in them apparently, researching that more now.
