Portmarnock have a open on Monday ok value at 40 quid compared to most links courses being 60 plus. There aren't many bad links courses in the country, RCD are doing a special until the end of the month if it's not too far.

The Island ( But you may still be putting ball on side of fairway ?) One of the best in Dublin (IMO).

    The hotel Links in Portmarnock.

Corballis as a warm up night before ( great at 20 euro)

European Club - check out if they are doing the matchplay (fourball and singles). Hard to get better once you get a good rate.
Rosslare is a nice links too and accessible.

If you want to see the real links golf in Ireland, go to the west coast Tonesy; Working from North to South you got; Rosses Point, Enniscrone, Lahinch, Doonbeg, Ballybunion, Tralee, Waterville. Plenty other great courses i've left out there but those are my pick of the bunch.

A group of us have this booked for the weekend after Easter. Strandhill on Thursday evening, Rosses friday morn followed by a hasty spin up to Murvagh in Donegal (€25 for Open comp on Fridays) and the Enniscrone Saturday. Can't wait to tick these off my must play list. Rosses Point should be in great nick as the West of Ireland is on the weekend before.

To the OP - a links within 1.5 hours of Carlow couldn't recommend the European Club more highly, fantastic course, forget the green fee price published on the website and just ring the proshop saying you'll be up from Carlow for the day how much will you do a green fee for, they'll probably do it for €60.

It would be a shame to stay in that neck of the woods and not play Carne (Belmullet) Never was the phrase "Beautiful monster" more apt when describing a golf course

Its purely that I have never played any of the above why they were omitted but i've played most from sligo downwards and hence thats where i started. Heard good things about most of the above u have listed just felt i couldn't recommend as I haven't played them.

Baltray is worthy of a mention too but given your location, I think the European could be your best bet if you can get it at a decent rate.

D'ont comment or open your mouth until the ball has stopped rolling from the tee, fairway or green.
Enjoy yourself, links golf is addictable. The way you think about golf will change after you have played tomorrows round.

You will miss the new 13th by a day, it opens on Sunday morning, they have added 65 yards to it, so now over 600 yards.

Enjoy the game, don't be tempted into driver to often.

Greens and fairways are perfect, course is in great condition, very playable a lot of the mid rough has been cut back, there has been some very low scores winning the past few weeks

Had 38 points first time playing Links yesterday in Portmarnock. Happy enough as it was first time and wind was up. Deffo hit it again soon. What a spot, so nice to be playing on hard fairways and greens, getting roll out on the fairways is a great.
Was really good off the tee and hit some lovely approach shots. What ive noticed about links is that if you miss greens sometimes only by a foot or so u can end up in a verrry tricky spot making chances of an up and down slim??. I hit a good approach onto that long par 4 5th (450yds) and ended up getting a dodgy lie and taking a fecking 6, happened a few times but otherwise i was happy with my golf

Seriously good shooting lad. First time seeing the course and first time playing links golf. +14 is very good.
Tbh I though +18 would have been a good effort. Well done.

Cheers dude, tbh after the first few holes i thought i was gonna wipe the course out haha, was bombing it and hitting irons nice, drive a gap wedge and tap in pars. Used my 3 wood for a good few holes too.

One of the holes was a killer dogleg right where the green was practically blind if you didnt run the ball right to the end of the fairway? Think it was hole 14, hit a 4iron and a blind 7iron to within 10 feet, shot of the day for me :) cannot wait to go back and give it another burst cos tbh id fancy a score of 9 or 10 over with smart play
