I am in the market for a new road bike (budget restricted from €1500 to €2,000). Looking for quality, best componentry and able withstand rural roads. I like hill as opposed to mountain climbing, but the important thing for me is quality and able to withstand the odd bump!I hear of Ultegra as opposed to 105 (whatever happened to Campag - is it still being made or is it only for those high end bikes?).Anyway I digress. I oriignally posted this in error on another thread - I'm a newbie so hopefully I'm excused and I got some very good suggestions from my pevious post, thanks to all.
Age profile 40+ , 5ft 10 height - any ideas - what brands spec etc. Grateful for any help which you may be able to give me! Could you please be bike specific, any particular bike that catches your eye??

At that budget, you'll have no difficulty in getting sorted, and Campagnolo groupsets are certainly still available. Stick with a Compact groupset('gears) These have two (50/34) chainrings rather than a double (52/39) which may make hills tougher when starting back or triple (overly complex and tricky to set up correctly)

You're in the price point for good/entry level carbon fibre frames, so dont buy too hastily and you'll do fine. Take a good look around some of the Irish shops sites and try to create a shortlist, above all, call into your local bike shop and see what they have to offer/suggest (but DONT go for the first shiny thing you see !)

Something like this perhaps? Pinarello FP1 with campagnolo Veloce group for €1800 or so

PS: THis should be in the regular cycling page, not in the training logs page. Suggest Mods move it?

I bought one of these and its fantastic up to over 100km at the weekends already. (I'm over weight and middle aged) well worth going to Athlone to touch and feel rather than goin internet route, proper fitting there too

I got it in revolve bike shop in Gorey, 58cm, was reduced to €1450 and was the last one from last years stock.

The 2012 model is 2k in cycle superstore, sweet bike and pleasure to cycle.

would one risk opprobrium if one showed up on a Sunday morning mounted on a Halfords Boardman road team carbon bike? V.good review in April's CyclingPlus. (I'd have to scratch off the union jack though)
    Anyone have one?

I don't have a Boardman, but the bikes themselves do have a better reputation than Halfords. Search the forum and you'll find a good bit of discussion of both.

Bear in mind that if you have (or someone you know has) insurance with AXA then you can get a 15% discount at Halfords with the AXA plus card.

The Union flag wouldn't bother me any more than the tricolore on a Bianchi: if it genuinely bothers you to the point that you'd take a blade to a carbon frame  then just don't buy a British brand - or, if you must, get a decal made up with a nice picture of Michael Collins and Peig Sayers to cover it :).

The GTC pro has Ultegra/105 + better carbon frame
    The GTC had 105/random components
