R U sure its mange?? - some foxes are starting to lose their winter coat and can look a bit scruffy at this time of year.

Well lad. I shoot the same area as you and I haven't seen much mange at all except one Place that I have seen it there repeatedly. And it is up in slievenamon. One of the farms I shoot has quiet a lot of sheep and any time they have a dead sheep they leave it in the same place and there is a concentration of foxes in that area. I think this is why they are passing the mange to each other.
As for every where else I can't recall ever seeing a fox with mange.

Fair enough - could be that the mild winter has allowed more mange mites then usual to survive and spread faster among the local fox population.

PS: If your lamping with dogs make sure they don't have too much contact with a mangy fox carcass - the last thing you want is these feckers infesting your best mates and all the grief that comes with it:(

Mange used to be around a lot more 20 yrs ago when we used to get a lot colder winters and foxs used to spend a lot more time in the dens but not so much now days with the milder winters most foxs hardly use the dens at all now except for cubbing. If it is colder where you are that might have something to do with it.
