    Hi folks,
Currently driving an 01 BMW 520i.
Leaving work this evening all going fine, 5 mins later the engine starts screaming like a bag of spanners on a tin roof.

Pulled in and the engine cooling fan shaft was wobbling and screaming like mad.

Help, is my engine bu**ered? and will I need a small mortage to put it right?

    All help appreciated.

Could be something as simple as a lump if muck stuck on the fan rotor, happened me before, the fan became unbalanced and made a right racket. Obviously Disconnect the battery before going near the fan itself.

Cheers for that, was the first thing I checked for, no obstructions or missing fan blades.

With fan running and looking directly down on it from above, the shaft itself is wobbling about.

Do not overlook this, get it fixed asap or you'll end up throwing a fan blade through your bonnet, it has happened on E39s.

It could be your belt, your water pump pulley or tensioner pulley. Water pump could also be on the way out.

    They're belt driven on E39s.
