Just pondering this. My wife has a US license, if she was speeding would she just get the fine and not have to deal with points?

If that turns out to be the case and I was speeding and she was with me what would stop me saying she was driving and just paying the fine?

BTW I don't have any points nor was I speeding I just thought about this this afternoon.

It doesn't have to be non-eu licence.
Only Irish licences are awarded with points in Ireland. So any non-irish licence holder won't get any point for offences.

However you can't just declare it wasn't you driving, while in reality it was you, as this would be a false declaration and therefore way more serious offence than speeding.

Afaik - you don't get points on foreign licences but if she ever swaps for an Irish licence they'll be waiting.
If that turns out to be the case and I was speeding and she was with me what would stop me saying she was driving and just paying the fine?
Will your wife be willing to pay the penalty for your offence?
Besides every time I've been stopped it's been by garda standing there flagging me down after catching me with the radar gun, no time to swap seats even if I wanted to.

Highly unlikely she'll pay it (but I can dream!), I was just curious is all. Obviously getting pulled over wouldn't apply but for speed cameras etc I was just wondering.

Good to know, like I said, I was just wondering, it's a slow afternoon!

Speed camera also often takes a picture of the driver's face. This could be a proof.

Her "points" would go on a shadow licence and would apply if she ever sought an Irish licence; does she live here o r was she ony visiting? If living here indefinitely, do she know she'll have to do a test after six months?

On the other question, it might involve asking afalse declaration or attempting to pervert the course of justice which a UK cabinet minister and his ex wife are currently finding carries a much heavier sentence if proven.

There was a piece about this in the Irish Times two weeks back.
The figures show more than two out of every five drivers penalised – or 302,894 motorists – had no penalty points recorded on their licences as they were holders of non-Irish driving licences.

And the best bit is that they never expire as they only become active if you get an Irish licence.

So in the OPs case. He would have 2 points for 3 years, which doesn't affect much TBH, while his wife will have points till 3 years after she gets an Irish learners permit, it could be an issue for a learner to already have PPs when looking for insurance.

Can you people who keep putting this bull about a shadow licence please read this!

my wife drove under an international licence in 2010. she was pulled by traffic corps in Ennis,co clare. gave her a ticket, fined 60 euro and supposedly 2 points on her licence.

i went to the Post office with the paperwork to pay the fine for her.The P.O, just accepted the fine and said their was nothing on the screen to accept points for that licence.

November 2011,she gets a full Irish licence.................. no points were recorded on her licence.

what elses do ye need to know? just ask

In contrast to User Friendly's experience, my wife was caught speeding by a camera in 2009 on a UK licence and fined €60 and 2 penalty points. She paid the fine and recieved a letter in the post informing her that the points would be assigned to her Irish driving record (refered to in the forum as a 'shadow license') and would not become active until you traded in for an Irish licence.

However she still has her UK licence and won't be trading it in until the photo expires in 2014 so we won't know for sure until then. A colleague of mine received a similar letter (and phoned for confirmation) when he was pulled in on a norwegian licence.

So, judging by the letter received, it seems possible that a 'shadow licence' or driving record concept does exisit. Mrs User Firendly may just have been lucky.

We'll have to wait until 2014 to know for sure!

So if the points don't expire on a shadow licence, what happens if a foreign licence holder picks up points at a steady rate, over a long period of time, says a total of 12 points over 10 years.

Then after 10 years, they decide to get an irish licence for whatever reason, is their new irish licence immediately suspended for 6 months? Seems a bit ridiculous...
