Leap card & bus ticket inspector query

Apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere, but just wondering what happens when a ticket inspector gets on the bus and you present your leap card. Do they scan the card to ensure there's a recent transaction? How can they tell if you've paid the right amount for your destination (it's not like the bus driver can be expected to ensure anyone who has paid a certain fare only stays on the bus for the amount of stops that fare covers)?
In other words, what's to stop a person from paying the minimum fare with their Leap card but travelling a distance that should cost them more?

They have a reader that can scan the card. It'll display for them where you got on and how much you've paid. If you've gone over your fair they'll just proceede as normal with someone who paid for a ticket and overstayed on the bus.

Nothing changes because you are using a Leap Card.

Ah ok, that makes sense. Thanks for your quick reply:)

Same with the Travel90 card, on the only time I was checked, the inspector pulled a scanner gadget from his pocket, held my card against it and it told him when I had last validated it.
