Do speed vans 'flash' when you've been caught speeding

I'm not even sure I definitely was speeding but I passed a speed van (one of the red ones with no apparent markings) a little while back and there was no flash. I'm guessing they have some new camera that don't flash, and I'm fecked.

Also, how long roughly is it before you get the letter?

I got caught in the daytime last year by an unmarked van that flashed. Letter in a few weeks.

Cheers. I'm still not sure I was speeding as I was accelerating up to get away from a car moving very quickly behind me after pulling onto the road and then braked as traffic backed up. But sod's law says that I'll be getting a letter.

Sounds like this video guy is using speed detection equipment to warn him in advance of a trap.... Thought they were illegal!

OP: I have seen the vans flash alright, there is usually one parked on Cork Street in Dublin about once a week and it catches speeders all the time.

He is and they are illegal.
I expect we will see an increased amount of people choosing to ignore/circumvent laws they see as being applied in an unjust way.
When people see others getting away with far worse white collar crimes and so on then they won't feel it is such a moral morass to cross.

But thats just how I understand why things are changing.

They flash during daylight as well. Got a smack of one right in the eyes last year. And no it wasn't me speeding.

I was looking at the video above, and there is a flash seen from the top left of the van. Is that an infrared light, and wouldn't been seen by the driver, but picked up only by the camera/dashcam?

Yes its infrared and you won't see it as a driver. If you were a pedestrian and accustomed to the dark, you might see a very faint red glow.

GoSafe Vans 'flash' every car that passes. Its part of the camera system. Not necessarily an indication you were speeding.

Garda Speed van there on North Wall, I take that road almost every day and never seen one there before. I didn't see it flash anyone but as others said it is infrared.
