External hard drive disk formatting

    Hi everyone!

I have a problem with my external hard drive that is 1Tb Buffalo ( I crashed it with overload, so I lost everything anyway on it, it is empty now). I try to do disk formatting with buffalo own formatter, however, it has been taken already 18 hours and seems to never end, I am kind of worried that program I use for formatting does not actually format. It does not show any percent that it has done or something to see that it has done anything at all.

My own computer does not see this external hard drive in Disk Management, so I can not use Windows for formatting, but this hard drive is visible in Device Manager.

By the way, I am using windows xp. Any advice please, am I on the correct way with this formatting?

If the drive isn't listed in the Disk Management Console, then there's something wrong.

Unless of course the Buffalo software has knocked it off. Can you restart the PC and see whether the drive is listed then?

I have restarted so many times already, it is still same, no external hard drive:mad:. At least I have got so far that this hard drive does not freeze my computer if I try to do disk formatting, but it takes soooooooooooooo long.

So, you do not see the drive in My Computer or in the Disk Management Console, is that right?

The only way to communicate with the drive is through Buffalo's own software?

Get gparted livecd from here: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
Burn the iso & roboot for the CD.
