Hi, Im new to wordpress and want to learn it for myself by making a portfolio website, but im having trouble setting it up, is it better to work offline such xammp of i was thinking about buying a domain name and work online???

also what hosting company would be good to work off if i did work online, i have been looking up Blacknight for a cheap domain name it only cost like € 7.99, but it does not say how much space i have to upload and all that.

Im fairly new to all this but would like to learn about it, so any tips would be great.

    Thanks:)

Please read the charter regarding the recommendation and discussion of individual hosting providers.

Using xAMP is a good way to start off when you're learning - it costs zero.

We can't discuss specifics of which hosting company, but a small WordPress site can be hosted by almost any entry level hosting account (the exception being some where they don't provide MySQL access).

Confirm with the hosting company that they support PHP v5.2.4 and MySQL v5.0 or greater before you sign up.

Don't Wordpress themselves provide a hosting option?

WordPress.com is a place you can host a WordPress site but it has a significant number of limitations. WordPress.org is where you can download the source code to do your own installation of WordPress.

Is XAMPP working correctly? Can you see the web site? Can you get into phpMyAdmin?

There's a fairly significant Cloud hosting provider named after a South American river where you can avail of a years free hosting that would be more than adequate for the solution you're looking for.

If you'd like more info, PM me.

You have to install xamp, there is a guide here -

    http://sawmac.com/xampp/

    then Wordpress -

Just take it slowly, step-by-step, and you'll get it. ;)

    XAMPP and IIS are clashing.
IIS is a web server from Microsoft. XAMPP includes the Apache web server.
I suggest uninstalling IIS or at least turning it off.

I have IIS set up on http://localhost and WAMP set up on http://localhost:8080/. Try http://localhost:8080 for XAMPP. Instructions here:

"apache IIS 7 welcome screen" - that does not make sense. You either get an Apache welcome screen or a IIS7 welcome screen.

Can you take a screenshot (Alt+Print Screen and paste it into Paint) so we can read the screen.

May I suggest using a "Wordpress Virtual Applicance' in virtual box.

When setting up virtual box, bridge the network to whatever NIC is active, and you can then access it within your LAN and outside of it if you wanted to.

    Error

    MySQL said: b_help.png
    Cannot connect: invalid settings.

phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

    This link may help:

    http://www.configure-all.com/phpmyadmin.php#a

You will need to ensure that the MySQL username and password in the config.inc.php file match the username and password in MySQL.

If you didn't set a password during set up then it's probably

    Username: root
    Password: leave blank

just unzip the wordpress zip into the Xampp/htdocs directory. You should put it in another filder inside htdocs like wp. So you could have C:\xampp\htdocs\wp\[wordpress content].
Just unzip it then point to http://localhost/wp in your browser to launch the install. Make sure to create a db for Wordpress first via http://localhost/phpmyadmin.
If you changed apache to port 8080 like above substitute localhost for http://localhost:8080/phpmyadmin etc. And make sure both apache & my sql services are running via xampp cp.
No idea of free web hosting, although I'd say many wouldnt offer scripting or db support. Theres a sticky thread about reccomended web hosts on the forum I think so look there :)

Skype can use port 80 (the http default) which breaks any xAMP service that starts after it does.

Fix: in Skype go to Tools - Options - Advanced - Connection and untick Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives

Restart Skype and restart your xAMP and it'll work now (if that was the problem).
