Hub Gear Mountain Bikes Y/N?

Thinking of adding to the stable...
I'm considering a new bike for doing a few trails on and a 30K round trip commute in the depths of winter.

I'm looking for the following :
    As light as budget allows.
Alfine 8 or 11 speed hub
    120mm forks. (Reba perhaps!)
Possibility of fitting a pannier rack on the back.

The only thing I can see at the moment is the Genesis IO.
This could be me pulling the trigger on the bike to work set-up, so it must be purchased in real shop! (On-One/Planet X) is not an option.

Budget in the region of €1,000. Will consider a single speed to be converted to Alfine down the line...

Planet X Ireland have a real shop in Athlone. As far as I know, they operate the Bike to work scheme

No, it has to be one of a couple of pre-defined bike shops. So it's big brands I need to look at; Spesh, Trek, Giant, Genesis/Ridgeback that kind of thing.

I researched this a while ago and decided that I would definitely avoid a hub geared mountain bike: too fragile, heavy and and finicky to set up, and issues shifting under load.

Then I bought a hub geared road bike and this reinforced my view.

If you do go ahead, please post back with your experiences. :)
