Classic GAA moments

Following on from a youtube clip I saw in the Kildare thread of Brian Murphy's goal for Kildare against Meath in the '98 Leinster Final and reading what it meant to Kildare fans at the time, just wondering what other 'classic GAA moments' people can think of - would be nice to hear exactly what they meant to people too!

For example, a few off the top of my head that probably meant so much to their respective supporters at the time..

    - Michael Donnellan's point v Kildare in the '98 final
    - Cluxton's point in last years final
    - Roy Malone '97 Leinster Final
    - Leitrim '94
    - Maurice Fitzgerald's ridiculous sideline point
    - Joe McDonagh 'The West's Awake'
    - Conor Gormley's 'game-winning' block in 2003 final
    - Ciaran McDonald's point v Dublin in 2006
    - Mugsy's goal v Dublin (05?)

Apologies if this has been done before..

Eoghan O'Gara's goal against Tyrone in the 2010 quarter final.

This was the day that the current Dublin team had finally arrived and we'd finally put a top team away in the championship (probably for the first time since 1995).

That (coupled with putting the painful memory of the 2008 quarter final defeat to rest) culminated in what was probably the best atmosphere I've ever experienced on Hill 16 (I was in the Lower Cusack for last year's final).

I take it that none of you watch hurling...

    - Wexford in 1996
    - Clare winning Munster and All Ireland in 1995
    - Offaly's comeback against Limerick in 1994
    - The Offaly v Clare All Ireland semi which was blown up early
    - Waterford's ups and downs starting with the Munster title win v Tipp in 2002

    Great period for the underdog...

For a small county offaly have had some good days

    1. Denying Kerry 5 in a row

    2. Johnny Dooley starting the comeback against Limerick 94 All Ireland

    3. Jimmy Cooney blowing up and the sit down protest against Clare, if we had tents we were there for the night that day

Never a dull moment in Offaly

I thought the picture/video thread at the top of the page would have covered a lot of this, but I guess not.

From a purely Clare point of view
-Martin Daly's goal in the '92 Munster Final.
-Seanie forcing the line ball against Cork
    -Fitzy's penalty against Limerick
-Steven Mac's goal against Galway, we never scored goals like that before.
    -Taffee's goal, oooooh, Taffee's goal
-Forde's goal in the Munster final after Sparrow nearly got killed.
    -Jamesie scoring the winning point
-Clare's unwillingness to accept when they were beaten, we got draws when in the past we'd be well beaten, especially against Galway and Tipp, in the end the team just ran out of steam :(

well as a kilkennyman i was on the end of many a good day for offaly

1980 leinster final we were all irelands champs they beat us

1985 we were 11 points ahead they came back and drew with us and won the replay handy

1990 sitting in croke park leinster semil 20 minutes and we were 3-7 to no score down

1994 beat us again well in the leinster again we were all ireland champs the year before

1995 thunder and lighting final got another lesson from them

1998 came back to win backdoor allireland Brian Whelehans 1-6 display
    when going full forward.

also my club lost club leinster to Birr fcuk i hate them Biffos

its lucky we don't play football and what they won there i leave that up to the kerryman after 1982.

but i tell you for a small county they were the best dual county out there
they gave the game Matt Connor and Brian Whelehan

    offaly we salute you

Up until 11th July 2010, this ranked as my most painful memory watching Louth. Stood at the hospital end when the goals went in. So many memories of that day

    - Leading by 4 points going into added time
    - 237 minutes of additional time
    - Large numbers of home supporters leaving before the 2 goals
    - Same fans subsequently running back in after the 2nd goal
    - The helicopter for Graham Geraghty

Still painful to watch. The Louth team thought they had it won when the additional time was announced and appeared to loose concentration - amazing naivety shown to let Meath in for the first goal and after that, panic set in. Can still see the build up to the 2nd goal and can still feel that send of inevitability setting in. The joys of following Louth!

Was a decent Louth side and played some great football that night. I've been told that defeat set them back years. Funny thing was we thought afterwards that it could never happen again....

The 2004 Munster Senior Hurling Final between Waterford and Cork. Enough said!

    My Hurling moments.

Tipp, Kilkenny finals in 09 and 10.

Antrim beating Offaly in 1989 semi.

    Limerick, Wexford final 1996.

    Offaly's late heroics in 1994.

Wexford upsetting the Cats in the 04 Leinster semi.

Kilkenny's masterclass against Waterford in 08.

Tipp's 1987 'the famine is over' Munster final win. It's hard to describe how much that meant in Tipperary.

My favourite part of that video is the sound of the Louth woman screaming 'No! No fcuking way' in the lead up to both goals.

From a purely Wexford point of view:

-Coming back from ten points down to beat Meath in the Leinster quarter final in Carlow in 2008.
-Giving Tyrone a right old rattle in the AI semi-final the same year.
-Beating Tyrone, the reigning All-Ireland champions, in the Division 1 League semi-final in the rain in O'Moore Park in 2004.
-Being present when Matty Forde scored 4-5 against Galway in Tuam, 0-12 against Meath in Croker and 2-10 against Offaly in Wexford Park.
    - Silencing the hill on the last two occasions we've played the Dubs in the championship (no sweeter moment than having the Hill boo-boys booing their own men).
    - Michael Jacob's last gap winner against Kilkenny in the Leinster semi-final in 2004.
    - Rory McCarthy's last minute equalising goal against Cork in the All-Ireland semi final in the same year.
    - Might be controversial, but seeing Wexford win the Leinster under-21 football championship last year (for personal reasons too as my brother was on the team). It was the first time I've ever seen Wexford win a credible under-age title, and I cherish it as it may be the last.

As a Galway man, take out M.Donnellans run againt Kildare and replace it with this D.Meehan goal from 2000.

If I'm not mistaken there was a few more passes before that as well.

Honorable mention to K.Brodericks solo run against Kilkenny in 2001 where he flicked it over a defenders head before pointing.

From a neutrals perspective, one I'll never forget is Mulligans run against Dublin with the 2/3 fake hand passes before netting.

Strange the things that you can remember vividly.

As a neutral in the Hogan Stand at the 1995 Leinster SFC final I'll never forget the Dubs on the hill spontanoeusly and gleefully bursting into a "shove the Royal up your a**e" chant as the Meath fans exited and the points kept going over - I think they won by ten in the end. Even though they had beaten Meath the previous year it seemed a kind of outporing as if the hurt of 91 was still with them.
Again as a neutral at the 97 Roy Malone final I recall the Meath team nearly struggling to jog out onto Croke Park before the game such was their apparent fatigue after the three game Kildare saga.
    Should have called Paddy Power.

ciaran carey's winner for limerick against clare in 96 , never seen anything like it easily my favourite score of all time

Cork winning the double in 1990. No other county has done it in the history of the GAA.

From a Tipp perspective my own personal favourite and the ones that still makes the hairs stand on the back of the neck is Nicky English's kicked goal, Richard Stakelums acceptance speech in Kilarney, Aidan Ryans unbelievablre goal in the Cork replay in '91, Eoin Kelly's display against Limerick when he scored something redic like 14 points, Lar's display in 2010 and everything Paraic Maher does on a field :D

And I suppose to add a bit of balance Declan Brownes two great displays in Croker, the Tommy Murphy Final which he won single handed and the qualifier against Donegal where he was majestic.
