Spreadsheet (Numbers) Help

I've a spreadsheet created in Numbers, designed so that when I select an item from a pop-up menu the next cell tells me where I can find it. It works just fine as the list at the moment is quite small. The list will be added to more and more over time and I wanted the pop-up menu to run in alphabetical order. The problem is that, in the Inspector, the items in the list can't be moved and so the only way to alphabetise it is to rename items. No issue if the item begins with X,Y or Z, but items beginning with an earlier letter require that I rename everything below it in the list.
Using the spreadsheet as is wouldn't be so bad on the Mac as I could drop the menu and type the first few letters of the item, but this is used primarily on an iPad and there's no facility to type into a pop-up menu. Any ideas, or am I missing something?

    Thanks

If I understand the problem correctly, a quick and dirty fix might be to pre-fix the item that appear in the list with a numeric code e.g. "0010 Dog Food", "0020 Cement Mixer", "0030 Xylophone" then to add something

"0010 Dog Food", "0020 Cement Mixer", "0021 Abacus", "0030 Xylophone"

Does this have possibilities or is it just plain stupid?

Thanks mathepac, I thought about that, but it would require remembering the numbers, and unfortunately using ref codes isn't an option in the environment in which this is used.
