I recently started playing anno 2070 ,its the first city building sim ive played in anger but its so enjoyable that its opened up a whole new genre for me that i never thought id have interest in.
So now im looking to expand my library of such games,i must be mad as ive too many games as it is but theres something very satisfying and relaxing playing anno, im hoping for more of the same so thought id ask here for suggestions.
I like the look of Settlers 7 from the vids ive watched on youtube, i might also grab sim city 4.
I came across Cities XL 2012 on youtube and it too looks decent, which is the better game Cities XL 2012 or Sim CIty 4?
    Thoughts and suggestions appreciated :)

tropico 3 and 4 are meant to be good, haven't played them myself (have them on steam from a sale :o),anno 1404 is enjoyable, set in a different age to 2070,I also would like to know which is the better game cities xl or sim city 4.also I really enjoyed the lastest settlers game.

Is Settlers 7 the latest in the series?

    Stick to Anno 2070, man.

I'm in the same boat as you; I had never touched the Anno games before I played this one and I LOVE it. There are so many things you can do in the game and it's NEVER the same. Just started a new city last night and planned it out exactly how I want it. this time, however, I added a pirate to the map and it's making it a LOT more interesting.

I also increased the map size, to increase the potential for expansion and upgrading my city. Already have 1 trade route going and am in the 3rd tech tree and just about to start building the lab rats. Looking to generate a city in the 10-15,000 range this time round and see what problems I run into.

    That's my suggestion!!

Other than that I played Settler III YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEARS ago and loved it. Can't really say how any of the others were but I got that one and the expansion (I think) and it was good fun but they are completely different games to Anno.

Tropico 3 is great, 4 is pretty much the same game with a few new buildings slapped in, get 3 - also one of the happiest soundtracks ever!

Totally forgot about tropico, is 3 really the best option?

Tropico 3 is fantastic. If you can get Tropico 4 for a similar price, get that instead. It's pretty much 3 with bells and whistles on top.

You could try Sim City 4 for now. Its quite good but not exactly along the lines off Anno.

The Settlers series is nothing like city building Sims imo. It's very Age Of Empires-like; ie gather food, build army units, attempt to take down an enemy.

Cities XL is alright... you get bogged down a lot with micro management unfortunately which is pretty much a killer in the game.

Personally I think you should try some the older Anno games. They're all very good. Caesar IV is also a very excellent take on city building in Roman times.

Imperium Romanum and Civ City: Rome are also enjoyable to a degree

I decided to grab Tropico 4,being a total noob theres a lot of depth but the small bit i played of a sandbox game was impressive.
Not a fan of campaigns but maybe i should play it to learn more about the game.

I can get over just how good Tropico 4 and Anno 2070 are.
I never thought id enjoy such games this much.

Caesar III is old but remains the gold standard in city building. Superb game

Why can't they make a modern update of Transport Tycoon?

I know there's a fan build open source version going around but really would prefer to play a modern graphics version

Not enough demand for it I'd imagine. Chris Sawyer's Locomotion was the successor to Transport Tycoon. It's quite poor but there's been a large modding community which brought the game up to scratch and is rather enjoyable.

Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe really is quite good. Runs fine on modern systems and the graphics have been given a slight polish. I'd highly recommend it

Tropico 4 seems more like an add-on to Tropico 3

Good game, I find I only play the game zoomed out and in x3 speed. Am i missing something?
