Peugeot 206 Power Steering Problem

The missus has a Peugeot 206 that the engine went on about a month ago. We got a second hand engine fitted and the car has been running alright since.

Yesterday though she was driving to work when she noticed the power steering wasn't working properly. Then the battery light came on so she pulled the car into the garage we normally go to that she was passing. When she stopped the car, it wouldn't start again. The garage said it was a problem with a "belt" and fixed it yesterday at a cost of €45.

Car drove home fine yesterday evening but this morning, the power steering has gone again. The steering wheel is just very stiff. She said its like its been superglued. Car will turn alright but just very slow and not responsive. Anyone with any ideas what it might be? I'm hoping it could be something simple like power steering fluid.

    Power steering control unit possible.

not a cheap fix if it is.

Could possible be an undercharged or dead battery with not enough power

AFAIK the 206 has hydraulic, not electric power steering.

@OP - I'd suspect the new belt wasn't fitted/tensioned properly. Is the battery light on again? If it's a problem with the new belt then i'd have the garage come to you and sort it out.

Nope, the battery light isn't on.

Check the level of power steeing fluid first...after that it could be belt as Anan1 said or a failed power steering pump/leaking rack.
