Condensing Boiler help

    Hi Folks,

I know this has probably been gone over multiple times but all help greatly appreciated.

The joys of Paddys weekend and the boiler decides to pack in. It was only fan this time but I suspect its the start of things to come. The boiler is in the house since it was built in the 80's and is now discontinued. Cant think of the name off hand. Also in general I dont think the currnet boiler heats the house sufficently, 3 bed semi with attic converted. ( Central heating extends to attic)

However my dilema is do I keep fixing the old boiler or take the jump to a new condensing boiler.

I got a quote of 1850 for a new Viesmann vitodens 100-w Compact or a Baxi megaflow I think?

If I do go down this route what should I be looking for.

1). What size boiler would i need. I think its a 26kW i was quoted for. Is that the correct size?
    2). Will smaller be cheaper?
3). What else should I be looking for?

    All help greatly appreciated.

    Kev.

There isn't a huge differance in price. All boilers are modulating now so they will only give out the heat required.

I would be asking if a chemical flush is included and ensure the quote includes inhibitor to be added on completion. This is a chemical that helps maintain the inside of the system.

    Thanks Micky,

I add the chemical flush and inhibitor to my list of questions.

Also is there a grant for upgrading your boiler and I assume I should look at potentially zoning my house as I dont think that exists?

Whats involved in zoning? Am I correct in saying that the Baxi do wireless zoning? Is this availbale with the Viesmann?

Also is there a SEAI grant available for this work?

    Sorry more questions.

    Kev.

Every system can be zoned. How easy it is, is another thing. You'd have to get an installer to take a look. There is still a grant availible of about €570 and a €100 toward a ber cert which you'll also need to statisfy grant conditions.

Zoning is indepentant of boiler (inc wireless) so it doesn't matter what boiler you go for. I'd go for the viesmann over the Baxi. But would probably favour the Ariston clas models over both.

Don't be afraid to question installers, get as much detail as possible.

I'm a Viessmann installer and to supply and fit a 26kW compact with a chemical powerflush I would not be able to do it for €1850. The price of the boiler alone would be €1000 then It takes a day to flush and a day to install and commission plus VAT.

Also if you go for the compact is the pump as old as the system? might be worth while changing that too, if so make sure it is wired directly into the boiler.
For a little extra you might consider the 26kW system boiler if you have the space. It comes with a new pump in it.

How did you come up with that figure?

Thanks Johnnie, I took your advice and went for the system boiler. I wasnt sure how old the pump was so for the little extra its worth it to have the gurantee for another 5 years.

Be mindful though. The warranty comes with conditions. For example, flush before boiler is fitted, inhibitired added, it is commissioned correctly and serviced annual there after.

There is much more involved in being self employed or running a business.
There are other expenses than just turning up at your door ,doing the job and making €200-€300 euros.
    Clearly not something you understand.
Please refrain from making such sweeping statements.

I took away the VAT content and price if boiler leaving the remainder for labour.

Do you honestly believe that it's just a matter of removing VAT?

Do you understand the difference between gross and net income?

Do you realise that every business, even the one you work for, has expenses?

Do you think it's a matter of taking a box (boiler) off a wall and replacing it with another box just like that.

Do you think fittings, pipe, chemicals, clips, cable, time clock etc cost nothing? I.e the job will not require any more materials then just a boiler?

You only want to thread spoil. The OP is getting helpful advice from professionals that choose to give it for free, I.E, we gain nothing financially from contributing to this forum.

You contributed nothing to his thread.

That is not how you work out labour costs for anything.
Micky has given you examples of other costs and factors involved.
I could list a dozen more.
If anyone wants a labour cost on a job they should simply ask for a breakdown of a quote. Anything else dragging this thread down will be deleted and earn an infraction.
