First aid advice following Fabrice Muamba’s cardiac arrest

Bolton Wanderers footballer Fabrice Muamba remains seriously ill in hospital following a cardiac arrest on the pitch on Saturday 17 March, where he received prompt attention from White Hart Lane’s medics.

Order of Malta has received queries for first aid advice from many football fans who are united in stunned shock and we have set up this page to point people in the right direction.

Sean Regan, Regional Training Officer at Order of Malta, said:

‘We share the nation’s shock at Fabrice Muamba’s sudden cardiac arrest and praise for those who treated him so swiftly. It’s shown many people the importance of first aid and prompted them to get in touch with us to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other first aid skills.‘

Everyone should learn first aid skills

'At football stadiums they have teams of first aiders, defibrillators to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm and paramedics to give appropriate drugs. But emergencies can happen anywhere at any time, and with up to 150,000 people dying each year in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live, many people have realised it’s important to learn, so they can be the difference between life and death.’

Order of Malta offer first aid training courses throughout the year and if you or a group you are involved with are interested in taking part in a first aid course which involves certification in AED use, please visit us at www.orderofmaltakilkenny.com or www.facebook.com/omackilkenny or www.twitter.com/omackilkenny and you can submit your course query.

We do like the Vinny Jones ad and we really do feel that as many people as possible should know basic first aid and AED use. We have several information sessions and public CPR demos taking place over the coming weeks around Kilkenny city and county where we will be working closely with the Irish Heart Foundation to deliver their citizen CPR programme to the people of Kilkenny. We will post all the info including locations and times soon on our facebook page and here on boards.ie
