Hi there, I need some advice on a job that was undertaken without a quote and permission. Last friday i dropped a 125cc bike to a reputable shop where i had bought it 5years ago. She had been lying up for a while and i knew it needed a good bit of tlc but wasnt quite sure what exactly. i rang first to check opening hours and said 2 tyres are flat anyway and seat latch is broken but it hasnt started in long time. Anyway i dropped it down and the owner said he was closing for paddys weekend but if i left ny number he'd call me. I said i just wanted a quote to get her going again. So he started writing down 2tyres seat latch and possible service. I never signed anything or received a quote or docket. So the first first contact was a call today saying basically 'yea we did the two tyres and latch, eh when we went to do the service your whole engine is rusted and you need a complete rebuild'. Now for what we've done you owe us €250 and if you want the engine done the total will be €650'. Then he had the cheek to turn around and say hes going away on friday and needs payment by thursday. Needless to say i was furious. Id just like to know where i stand legally and why he would do that without calling, quoting or giving me a docket??? Because basically now he has commited me into a €650 sale without prior guide price or a go ahead and if i dont take it he wants €250 and i get a bike that i cant drive or sell. All help is really appreciated because i am livid.
    Cheers

What time did he ring you at today? The reason I'm asking is he told you he'd be closed over the weekend, and today is the first day back. It's unlikely he did any work on it at all today. I dunno, it sounds suspect to me. I definitely wouldn't hand over any money if I were you. I can't help you with the legal aspect, sorry.

Hi there, he rang me about 3 o clock this afternoon. He's a bloody cheek to try pull this one on me. Im in the repair industry myself, different sector but i know how you go about these things professionally. Im not handing over a cent. im anoyed that he did this work and neglected to quote me beforehand.. then said id need major engine work. thanks for advice. much appreciated.

so you keep your money and he keeps your bike

As far as I can see you agreed to have the tyres replaced, seat latch fixed and a service. 250 is probably reasonable for that (maybe not for a small scooter) I don't see what reason you could have for not paying for the tyres and seat, and whatever part of the servicing was done.

Very stupid mechanic to go doing work geting parts etc for a bike that he did not know if the engine was even working on by the sounds of it the op wanted to know the total cost ya he knew it need abc but he want to know how much the lot would cost before any work was done.

    Nobody's said anything about parts.
OP, did you get an itemised bill for what work has been done? Tyres, parts, labour? Until you have that you don't have any basis for complaint tbh.

I'd ask what checks he did to come to the conclusion that the engine is rusty. To properly determine that he would need to strip it down. i'd tell him to put the old bits back on the bike and take your business elsewhere
