New wheelset needed, trekking or not?

The rims on my Giant CRS Alliance commuter are now worn down past the indicator that says they should be replaced, the current ones are listed on the specs as "Giant Lite Trekking II". They've lasted well and have no dings or buckles and haven't needed truing in over 6000kms of commuting, so I'd like to stick with the same wheels of something just as sturdy. I can't find the exact wheel listed anywhere so presume its direct from Giant only, no doubt with a silly price. Any suggestions on a replacement wheelset and is their much involved in fitting them, I imagine the front one isn't that difficult even for the hamfisted, but what about the rear?

Probably need a new chain too as its still the original, not slipping or anything but is 6k kms pushing it? Stick with a Shimano HG73 or is there anything more suitable?

Anything else I should consider changing, bearing in mind everything seems to be working perfectly at the moment :D

Edit: Do these Campagnolo Khamsin Clincher Wheelset seem appropriate?

There was a great deal on Mavics in the deal section here from chainreaction i think normally over 270 down to 170 INC TYRES AND TUBES.

would it be disastrous to cycle away and wait for a failure ?

or trade in for Complete new bike ?

Thanks for the pointer Bigus but I can't find any reference to the Mavics you mention, any idea where I'd find it?

I'veno idea what happens with a rim failure but I can't imagine its good if it moving at 25kph in traffic. A new bike would be nice but I just bought a new mountain bike last week so that isn't likely to happen I'm afraid. I quite like the one I have anyway so it would take a lot to tempt me away from it.

Most hybrids use 135mm rear spacing (mountain bike hub) while road bike wheels (like the campag khamsins) are 130mm. Check the spacing of your rear hub before you buy a replacement.

I'd go SRAM for chains over Shimano. If your going to chainge the chain you may aswell change the cassette too - a new chian will slip on an old cassette.

Unless your current hubs are toast is there a problem with just changing the rim and some new spokes? Might work out a bit cheaper and you know the hub will fit etc....

Thanks for that info, ! wasn't aware of the difference. I suppose that's going to narrow down the choice a lot.

Found 'em, no discount for the loyalty price either, but still seems a reasonable price. I'll give holyboy in BeeCycles a call today and see what BX 19's suggestion of just new rims will cost as hubs are fine as far as I can tell.

Those nice folks in Rosebikes sent me a huge catalogue this week and in it are a selection of wheels/hubs in various sizes, including some 700C wheels with 135mm hubs, I couldn't find them at CRC or Wiggle. These trekking wheels seem to be reasonably priced, €141 including delivery, any opinions on these as replacement wheel set? Or does anything else there seem more appropriate or better value, they have some wheel sets starting at €99 delivered.

A new wheelset would be the cheapest option, without measuring the rear dropouts I wouldn't know what spacing they have but more than likely 135mm but it could be 132.5mm which is becoming more popular these days and will take either road or HYBIRD:D wheels.

Thanks Holyboy, who doesn't like the cheapest option, a long as its not money wasted on poor quality gear. I meant to call you last week but only ever remembered late in the evenings, you very kindly serviced my bike last summer so it'll down to you for fettling soon enough, I'll do my best to remember earlier today.

I'm assuming I measure between the inside edge of the dropouts? Did this yesterday and was reasonably sure they it was 135mm, but now you've throw 132.5mm in there I'll have to do it more carefully!! Please nobody tell me there's a "special" 133.759mm option too ;)

Well it seems my rims are actually fine so no need to buy anything for quite a while yet :) Always pays to get someone who knows what they're talking about to take a look before reaching for the credit card. Thanks for all the advice offered, I'm sure it'll come in useful in the future.
