not technically pc building/upgrading related.. but we all like to sit and i'm sure some of us are (like myself) fat bastards who spend most of the day sitting in front of their computer

so what's the chair of choice for the padded arsed nerds of boards.ie? I had one of the viking direct 50E whatever brand chairs before.. high enough back, wheels.. leather(ish) and I'd like something a bit like that but.. more comfortable, and maybe with a higher back so I can lean my neck back while I contemplate

i know pricing is a big deal with chairs so I'd rather spend somewhere in the 1-200 category, but can bump it up to 300 if i'm told the chair can induce orgasm

Cheapo Ikea job for me, I find it pretty comfortable. If you're near the Ikea in Ballymun you should stop in and sit in them all, that's how I did it (but my budget was about 50 quid :P). I ended up with this
    http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/50133762/
you're probably looking for something a little more classy though, with that budget. Do Ikea deliver to Carlow? It seems likely.
    What about this one:
    http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/30196798/

edit: just re-re-read your post: It seems you're looking for something altogether more classy, possibly more so than even veritable Ikea's finest offerings (can it be so?!?). I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise for my cheap-ass suggestions :pac:. As way of compensation, how about this: http://www.amazon.com/Alera-Swivel-Mahogany-Finish-Oxblood/dp/B00272N0HY/ref=zg_bs_1069132_19 :P

Speaking of Ikea, the brother has a Marcus chair from there and from what I have sampled I think it is very comfortable and in the right price range. I'd get one myself if I had a large enough appartment.

Not everyone agrees though, so I'd maybe try before you buy if possible.

I also have the Markus http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/20103101/

It has a high back, I bought it after a spinal injury and found it very comfy. Am now trying to get used to it again after a recent second bout of surgery.

    I like it.

theamateur.. lol, that'd actually be pretty awesome

I have been looking at the markus chair alright and have been wondering if its worth a trip to dublin to sit in one.. my only worry is that the back might be slightly too high for me, my head might be resting just underneath the headrest or at some other uncomfortable position. It is exactly the "idea" of chair i'm after though and it does look fantastic.
im not tiny or anything (5f10 - shut up) but from the pictures and a youtube video I saw that headrest does look awfully high up

That would be a good topic here alright. I would love something more comfortable too. I spend so much te in that chair, so I might aswell invest in to something more "healthy".
Ikea is only in Dublin lads? They don't do deleveries? Maybe there is some sort of online shop for such stuff?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

they do deliviries but anything outside of dublin is 120 euro regardless of cost of item

they really want you in ikea so you impulse buy a few other things too :)

If you do decide to make the trip the most important part is not telling the wife/girlfriend, if you have one, where it is that you are going.

10 minutes to pick up a chair > 4 hours looking at everything.

It's well worth splashing out a little extra for a chair that you are going to be sitting in for over 40 hours a week.

I have an Aeron chair from Herman Miller and it's fantastic, I've never had any aches or pains from sitting and it's very customisable.

The really weird/annoying think about Ikea deliveries is that you have to go there, pick up what you want, and then tell them you want it delivered to you. For me, it's about a two hour trip, one-way. :(

It does seem to be the best place to get cheap, decent-ish stuff though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭spicymchaggis

    try looking on http://www.vikingdirect.ie/
They do some nice ones, got mine there and they deliver. Delivery is also free over €75

Sure get a cheap chair from Viking if you want to destroy your back.

Get a Herman Miller Aeron or Mirra chair, anything else is messing. If you read the small print on those cheap chairs they say it's not recommended to sit in them for long periods :)

Bit of a silly statement. Anyone who knows anything about ergonomics/posture will tell you you shouldn't sit in ANY chair for extended periods. Spending big bucks is nice if you can afford it but after 5years of hard use(up to 14hrs a day) my 90€ Argos chair has done me just fine.

I might upgrade to a high back in a while as this ones a little frayed at this point, but its far from necessity.

was looking at buying a computer chair myself, this one on amazon is my front runner
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Topstar-OP20UG20E-Design-Swivel-Breathable/dp/B005F3VGDW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

    seems very well made

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭Markd250

I have a Topstar chair myself (bought secondhand from adverts). Well made, comfortable, rock solid.

Only minor issue is that the wheels run a little free!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

    damn this looks sexy!

    http://www.vikingdirect.ie/a/pb/Rome-Executive-Office-Chair/pr=QD3&id=3267168/

do these guys ship single orders? or you need to buy in bulk?!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

single orders and free delivery if order is over 75 iirc

it looks real comfy alright, but the back is only 66cm or so

found a couple on amazon im going to have to take a closer look at the reviews for
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/LUXURY-OFFICE-CHAIR-DOUBLE-CUSHION/dp/B003UTS5JG/ref=pd_sim_office_1
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Executive-chair-office-RACER-leather/dp/B004G91RMG/ref=pd_sim_office_1
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Charles-Jacobs-EXECUTIVE-COMFORTABLE-ERGONOMIC/dp/B004OCKUUK/ref=pd_cp_office_1

the middle one looks pretty good, except for the godawful colours.

seeing loads of mesh chairs that are getting great reviews but I really dont know how good they'll be for prolounged sitting/lounging/touching myself late at night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

That middle one has a review which prety much says: if you are a big fella, then give it a miss.

I am not calling you a fat bastard, but I know thatIt would be an issue for myself :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,831 ✭✭✭Lucutus

    Comfortable for long periods.

When you go looking for them, they can seem pricey, but well worth it, shop around, replicas are made for any budget.

Mine is about 5 years old now and still going strong, going to send it to be recovered and polish up the tubing.

i assumed they meant tall :)
maybe I should read more closely

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eliza-Tinsley-609KTAG-LBK-Contrasting/dp/B004P8J180/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_0

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eliza-Tinsley-9211ATG-LBK-Contrasting/dp/tech-data/B004P8J17Q/ref=de_a_smtd

these two look real nice, but sod all reviews. dropping 200 euro for a chair without reviews and without having sat in it is a hell of a risk :/

I have the ikea markus and its a very nice chair.

good back support and my head wrests nicely on the headrest i am just under 6ft.

i bought expensive enough chair from viking http://www.vikingdirect.ie/a/pb/Helsinki-Executive-Office-Chair/pr=QD3&id=3273066/

the build quality is shocking on these i had to send 2 back because it was impossible to fit the armrests to the chair. assemble is absolute nightmare with these.

I put the third one together and it has slight lean to the left.

luckily i only spent €60 on the thing. they had a sale at the time and i used a voucher.

The markus assemble is so much easier and it a very sturdy chair would recommended avoid viking!

also If your going down to ikea checkout the galant computer tables with T legs. very nice

The chairs in Ikea are really comfortable. got a sweet one for 150 euro

decided to go for this one
thre were a few cheaper ones on amzon i was looking at, but once you factored shipping in they didn't work out a huge deal cheaper than that one and if im gona be spending 150+ i'd rather spend 200 on a better chair

    well.. i hope it's a better chair anyway :)

looks a real nice seat actually, pity there wasn't a few more reviews about the chair and not the packaging.
I was gonna go and order this but i'll wait for your review miss Eliza Tinsley Caesar!:D

I've been using one of these for about 5 years.

    Lazy-Boy-Recliners.jpg

It's not a computer chair per se and its big so takes up alot of room.......but my theory is that If I'm going to be spending 4 or 5 hours a day sitting on something, I want to be comfortable.

Plus the massage function is godlike. Don't get that from your Ikea chairs! :p

yeah im tempted to do up a 2000 word review on the state of teh box it came in when I get it
I ordered a dvd from amazon which shipped 2 days ago and arrived today, so if my chair ends up shipping soon (bloody hope it does, i have to rest my current chairs legs on a pillow as 2 of the wheels broke off) i'll get it early next week so check back then :)

arrived today after shipping on the 26th, took about 30 minutes to put together on my own.
it's pretty awesome. really really comfortable. it's also ****ing *huge*. if I stand away from my desk and look at it my desk looks kinda tiny in comparison. i'm around 5foot10 and the headrest is kinda perfect for me, it'd work well ifyou were a little smaller or a little taller

it can lock the back straight, but can't lock into a leaning position. the leaning is a tiny bit stiff, but im sure that'll work itself out over time.

it looks really cool. only time will tell if it stands up to extended periods of use, but i'd imagine it will. I already find myself sitting up in a better position to type at the computer and if I sit back and rest my head on the rest I could see myself napping or enjoying a movie.
all in all great chair. it's up to you whether or not it's worth 200 euro (think it came to 212 all in all) but I'm happy with my purchase.

my one concern is that the arm rests are in such a position that having a quick **** might be kind of awkward

Good stuff Sir Digby Chicken Caesar, that chair you got sounds good. I actually got a new table and chair last week. I went for the topstar in the end although I was close to getting the one you mentioned (this was before you had the review up). The main reason I went topstar was so I could actually get some work done on it and not just sit there basking in the luxury of it!;)
The topstar is actually a brilliant chair, really delighted I got it. It looks ugly in the pictures especially the mesh but when I opened it actually looks real good. The chair cushion looks fat on amazon too but it looks normal in person. It is very well made and very heavy if you try to lift it -but lucky enough the wheels work perfectly :D
The mesh is the perfect shape to keep you sitting upright and everything can be adjusted as normal.
All in all delighted I got it, very solid and comfortable and its still got the respect that I get up off it when I need to fart
