Get it fixed before you sell it anyway.

Toyota may have a (over exaggerated) reputation in this country for reliability, but gearbox failure is a well known fault on that generation Avensis. The older Toyotas were better for reliability without a doubt, the modern ones are no better than most other cars.

Also the older VVTi petrols are renowned for burning oil as the miles pile on (a bit of a pity as they're a great engine when they're working!).

Price a reconditioned box, the replacement may not much better than the original.

    Def fix it before selling.

Had the same problem with a year 2000 avensis at roughly the same mileage (cant quiet remember) 3 years ago. I managed to source a reconditioned gearbox and got it fitted for 300e. Money well spent to be honest the car is now on 235,146 miles and still going strong. On the oil burning issue it just needs to kept an eye on and a bottle of engine oil in the boot just in case. The occasional prayer it will pass the emissions levels for the NCT is also required but other than that there have been pretty much no problems apart from its love of blowing head lights every 3 months which is a little annoying.

I got a gearbox for my diesel avensis a month back for €300 actually. Big improvement.

You'll never shift an avensis with a knackered gear box, and you won't get a decent car (bangeromics thread maybe) for the cost of the repairs.

This year I've had to replace my fuel filter, gearbox, clutch, and flywheel. Car's at 225k miles, so something was bound to give eventually. With the miles I have, it's worth nothing to anyone but me.

Fix it and drive it into the ground. :D
