    Does a pay as you go vodafone phone operate in the States ?

    The USA bands are 850 and 1900 MHz, compared to the 900 and 1800 MHz of Europe and much of the rest of the world.

    So tri- or quadband phone

    They also have 3g on those frequency bands, but not all 3g phones supplied here will have 3g on the same bands

    But the roaming rates there won't be good, so for any more than modest use I'd say look into local SIM cards or some of the global roaming SIMs with multiple IDs which have cheap use there.
