European consoles

So why is there none ?
The only one I can think of is the Amstrad GX4000 which was hardly a rousing success, was there any others ?

While there are plenty of successful game developers in Europe, the hardware development seems to rest mostly with the Japanese and the USA in later years.

It's because the european market was almost completely dominated by home computers. Europe in the 80's wasn't like US boom time in the 80's, it was a pretty miserable place. Why would a kid spend 50 poiunds or more on a cartridge game when he can get the exact same game for pocket money prices (or copy it to a C90 :) ). The only console that did ok in Europe before the SNES and Megadrive was the master system and even that had a tiny fraction of the market. It was just different markets.

Ya I guess 4.99 on the latest Mastertronic release was a lot more pocket friendly than a 50 cart.
Yes the 80's were bleak alright even had too settle for the green screen Amstrad - which still cost 400 quid if I remember correctly !!

The gamers of the 80's were surrounded by euro tech,
Sinclair ZX80, ZX81, Spectrum series, QL (ok, maybe not that one...)
    Acorn BBC B, Electron, Atom
    Oric 1
    Dragon 32
    Amstrad CPC464/646 series

It was the Atari and Commodore US blow ins, along with the few MSX nuts about the place that spoiled the euro party love in!

I think Philips made a Videopac console. Philips being Dutch equals instant European qualification. :)

That was just a Magnavox Odyssey² re-branded for euroland wasn't it?
It's the first console/computer I can remember from my childhood either way :)

So, what are the odds the Raspberry Pi could become the "new Euro-puter"?

If people can actually get their hands on it, maybe.

What about the Philips CD-i should the Philips company be Dutch?

    Shhh!
Or you'll set off the whole CDi/Zelda thing again and Retr0 will sulk, and when he sulks, no one gets any piece!

Watched that the other night, love that film. Actually that clip mustn't be the special edition as it's missing a little speech from Hudson about the weapons. Special Edition or nothing with that film, adds a lot to the story. /Aliens nerd-mode off

No, those games defined pants, when actual pants that you wear came along people looked at them and said, "They look awful and are a very disappointing follow-up to the series so far, just like Zelda on the CDi, hmm, so the name Pants would seem appropriate...".
    True story...

I'm sorry guys but the cinemas in the Zelda CDi games suck but they are in fact excellent games, canon or not. And to be honest, Nintendos canon zelda timeline is as bad as those zelda cinemas.

So, you've finally come to your senses? Time for some Superman N64. Why don't you do a playthrough & clear it like you did Castlevania & Contra...

it turned into a room, funny enough there is an Xbox 360 in there now. Wouldn't mind having it back to be honest, I picked it up in the blackberry market about 10 years ago for 20 pounds. I was in Philips in Belgium when they were launched, I thought they were magic at the time and ahead of the pack in may ways, they mixed the media usage in ways that would still put Nintendo to shame IMHO. If things went differently who knows, worth a mention on this thread though.

For a moment there I thought you were in Philips in Belgium (I thought they were Dutch?) and they gave you an XBOX 360. Bizarre!

yes receiving a Xbox 360 slim and the Zumba pack for the woman i didn't known back then in the early 1990's was special.

I was on work placement in a power supply Philips factory, they made nothing as nice as a CD-i there, but they had a presentation for it on the way in. I think their last European TV manufacturing plant was about to close when i was there too. I remember the big talk was about how large their product line was (something like 330) different models of TV from the one place, most people thought 50 would have been enough. I guess Phillips were involved in so many areas of electronics, it must have been difficult to get a team to stay focused on the one product.
