Wind noise from Helmet

Never really noticed it until recently, but my helmet generates a lot of wind noise when cycling.

It's like driving with your head stuck out the window.

It never bothered me that much, but recently I was out with a mate and I couldn't hear a word he was saying

I have a peak on the helmet, which I took off, but it didn't make much difference.

Is this normal, or did I buy a crap helmet (Bell Alchara about €60), or can I get some sort of deflectors for it?

Clearly a case of cycling too fast. Slow down.

    :pac:

Clearly you need to upgrade your cycle-helmet to one of these!

I had a similar situation, a whistling sound when I cycled fast. Turned out to be an old ear piercing I had hadn't closed up properly.

That's the way to have it. If you want conversation, go to the pub! :)

You should ride with a phone made from tin-cans and string between you. Then noise will not effect you unless you manage to ride at the exact speed that causes a harmonic in the tightened string...then...well then its carrier pigeons.

Are you sure it's the helmet? Did you re-create the exact same circumstances whilst riding without a helmet, and still have the same hearing problems?

yea, it is definately something to do with the helmet. my mate had none on and could hear me absolutely fine
when i cup my ears i can hear, but don't want to have to do that all the time

I same the same problem with mine (also a Bell, but I couldn't tell you the exact model). Don't give a ****e about being able to make conversation, but I can't check for approaching traffic coming to junctions unless I really slow down.

Call me old fashioned but if one can't see approaching traffic coming to junctions then one should really be slowing down to an almost stop anyway (where junction indicates that you should yield) and should actually stop (where junctions indicates same). Whatever about not being able to hear approaching traffic - if you can't see them, then you need to stop.

Gonna go out on a limb, and say that it is possible that your ears aren't as aerodynamic as your friend's ears. Is it IVCA-legal to tape your ears back?

Sorry LD, I haven't made myself clear. I'm one of the few remaining folks who when walking/running/cycling likes to keep his ears free of earphones, etc. I like to have all senses at the ready and it feels strange when one of them isn't performing when I need it to. Of course I stop and look around me.
