Are longer spins killing my commuter?

    Hi all,

I've been commuting a little over 100km a week on my Giant Escape for the last 9 months or so and it had held up well.

However in line with my ambitions I've also been fitting in more long rides and yesterday I did a 67km spin from Tallaght to the Tara Hotel outside drumcondra and then across Fairview and out to the summit at Howth head.

This morning I discovered early in my commute that I had developed a slow puncture at the back and a bit of black wire/cable in my front brake caliper had snapped.
Can this be expected as normal wear and tear or is there a limit to the weekly mileage a citybike can handle?

No, you just need to service it more often.

The more you use it the more wear and tear you'll put on it, just means you'll have to service it more often. Best option is to convince yourself you need a second bike for long spins :D

    That's what I'm doing!

A 12 year old just showed me how to fix the brake caliper!

How often do you service your bike?

I do a small service (drivetrain cleaning, chain lubrication, etc.) and a general check up every second day on my commuter, i.e. at least 3 times a week and I do over 200km per week usually. And if there is anything that I feel needs to be done, I replace it, but in fairness I only needed a set of tyres, a new chain, pedal bearings and front wheel bearings for the last 12 months.
