I'm getting a Japanese Sega Saturn but I don't know/I'm not sure which games to get

Also worried about getting a game and it being to difficult to decipher what to do (thread title continued)

So far I have picked out the following potentials:

    - Bomberman Fight (can't have a console without the bomberman action)
    - Layer Section

That's it! Obviously I will be looking at some Street Fighter games but not sure of which one.

Does it really matter which model I get? I won't be modding it in any way. It's hard not to want the one that tells you it's cool though.

Also I've came across a bundle with these games included:

    - Dragon Ball Z
    - Grandia
    - Langrisser 3
    - Samurai Showdown 3
    - Shin Shinobi Den
    - Vampire Savior

    Any of those worth getting?

Any help will be greatly helpful :D

To experience true Saturn greatness, your gonna have to mod it. Unless your Steve SI, because some of the games are rare/very pricey gems.

Being JAP, it'll be 60Hz so that saves you one mod. Get the 4 in 1 cart, that'll save another by making it region free, only thing you really need then is a mod chip or a massive bank account.

Here are a few great ones you can play without speaking any Japanese -

    Cheaper -
    Assualt Suit Leynos 2
Elevator Action Returns (you should be able to get this for about €30 if you keep an eye out)
    Soukygourentai
In The Hunt (bit laggy but still fun)
    Guardian Heroes
    Panzer Dragoon
    Panzer Dragoon Zwei

If you want to spend some money -

    Radiant Silvergun
    Battle Garegga
Panzer Dragoon Saga (get the PAL version)

Anyone know if you can play the Jap version of Burning Rangers? Or would you need it translated? Always meant to give that a go.

Okay maybe so. If I was to go down that route, any particular model that's a really awkward thing to install the mod chip on?

    Round buttons or oval buttons?

What about those games listed above?

The round button models are more compatible with mod chips. The oval button model generally requires the mod chip to be modded []

It's something to think about in time, no need to address it now. Start building your collection, you'll know when the time is right

@ImmediateEntrance: Mine is a Japanese Model 1 and I don't have it modded, and I get lots of Saturn Greatness from it! :)

@Pantrylad: I was going to get Elevator Action Returns for the Saturn, but now I have an F3 board on it's way to me, I'm thinking to get the F3 cart in Tokyo this Summer and make do with the Taito Memories 2 edition until then. Awesome game it is.

@OwaynOTT: Layer Section is a game dripping in awesomesauce. Get it. Then buy every other SHMUP you can for the Saturn. Job done. :)

@Pyongyang: Sounds like a plan but you've turned me off Layer Section now that I know it's covered in Chef Tomato Sauce (or as the gods of Olympus called it - Ambrosia).

BTW the one that I'm currently in the process of acquiring is a roundy model.

I'm a Heinz man myself. Brown sauce though has to be HP. If it's good enough for the Queen it's good enough for a peasant like me. :D

@Mountain Lodge Man: I reckon the chip is definitely necessary, the price of Panzer Dragoon Saga alone warrants it. Thats only one example, the games are crazy money & while the OP will build his collection over time, the chip means you don't have to wait while your saving up.

But your right in that there's plenty of affordable/cheap gems too

    True I guess but...

That's what I would do too. Although personally I just play the millions of cheap to mid-price games while saving up for the megabucks ones.

Garrega though I might go for the PCB instead now. Not sure if the home version has more features than the PCB though. I forget. Personal choice though but toally understandable why it's worth getting one modified. :)

Oh lord, if you get that I will be well jealous! I've only ever seen that cart listed once on ebay and it was for a nice sum of money. Can't quite remember the exact figure but I think it was around the €300 mark.

I keep meaning to sort out my own Saturn with a modchip but have yet to get around to it...although not having one gave me an excuse to buy PDS and Radiant Silvergun :pac:

My adivce about Saturn games, if it's an arcade game it's more than playable and quite possibly in english/engrish. If it's an RPG get the US version or you'll be boned. The one exception is Wachenrodder which has a fan translation of the script on gamefaqs so you can play it and grasp the story. It's also very cheap and comes with some excellent goodies.

Get a modchip and 4-in-1, yes they'll cost you the same as the console did. But you're really limiting yourself without them.
Try and get the round buttoned console, adding the chip is very straightforward.

So I got it today with some games and here's the shortlist of games that ill be purchasing this week.

    Waku Waku
    Assault Suit Leynos
    Layer Section
    Sonic R
    Bomberman
    X-Men Children of the Atom
    Real Bout Special
    Cyberbots
    Street Fighter Collection
    Guardian Heroes

And after that I'm spent until the summer and all this stuff will be coming to me through post to the workplace, as the looks I'd be getting at home wouldn't be worth it.
And also the ones in the post office. Now when I go in with my 'sorry we missed you' slip, the lady at the counter gives me the same look.

    Go Sonic-R with that soundtrack...

    "Can you feel the passion..."
    Sweeeeeet!

I remember an Edge interview where they spoke to someone from the european hardware dept and they thought the Saturn was ideally placed to become the niche gamers console of choice, citing Burning Rangers and Sonic R as proof....
I think the machine was discontinued within the month of the publication.... she may not have gotten that particular memo! ;)

I've Virtua Fighter 2, and while I enjoy it, I don't think its an essential purchase since fighting games have advanced so much since then. That said, its not an expensive purchase, and far better than some of the other fighters on the system.

Battle Arena Toshinden is as bad as everyone says it is.

Having played Tomb Raider on both the PS1 and Saturn, I'm irritated to say the PS1's controls are far more intuitive and cause less cliff-splat-deaths and the game is far less frustrating all round. Perhaps cheaper to pick up a PS1 copy too, I think there were several re-issues / Platinum Hits version of it.

Virtual On is worth playing since its like nothing else (that I know of anyway), though sequels/versions are also on the PS2 and Dreamcast. Dunno if the game is improved with the twin sticks controller. Versus mode (if memory serves) requires another Saturn, another copy of Virtual On, a DirectLink cable and another TV.

Daytona USA is a love it or hate it game. I drive like a chimp and its one of the few racing games I enjoy.

Saturn Bomberman has 10 player multiplayer.

And I know bugger all about imports since I've only just ordered a 4-in-1.

Sonic R truely is one of the worst games I've ever played. The characters control like a bus on ice.

There's an awful lot of arcade conversions there that you are better off emulating. If you have a saturn you are better off concentrating on buying games you can't get on any other system.

Playing a game about driving a bus on ice sounds kinda fun in a Mario Kart meets GTA kinda way.

But if Sonic is in it and its in 3d... well...

Virtua Fighter 2 is a must have and Virtua cop with the light gun..what a game.
Also Panzer dragoon Zwei...man I love that game.
    Sega Rally..the list goes on.

I think the replay-ability of Saturn games really make them stand out from other crap at the time.
Easy to finish but layered with so many intricacies/rewards and deep game mechanics that keep you coming back again, and again.
