Help with a reserve horse beating my horse

I backed Kyimns Way on St Pats day in Wexford
He came second and was beaten by first reserve, so tore up my docket

Gary O'Brien on his At The races blog, who tipped it said in his blog that at least Kyimns Way backers get their money back as reserve won it.

Bookies however say they dont know of this rule.

    Anyone ever heard of it?
Cant get through to Gary oBrien at the moment.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

Boyles and PP have the rules on the wall (as with all bookies), clearly states the reserve counts for betting purposes even if the reserve wasn't in the market when you placed your bet, what bookies did you do it with, have a look at their rules on the wall.

They used to call that kind of runner,up from below the line but you still lost your money

some bookmakers will offer a special on an individual race that if your horse comes in second to the favorite you get your money back, so perhaps that was what Gary was talking about, I've never heard of there being money back specifically because a "reserve" won. Some bookies have a first past the post rule which means that even if the winning horse is disqualified by the stewards they will still pay out.

Thanks for comments guys....still no contact with Gary O'Brien

    Just something else.

Horse was backed at morning prices and reserves still in.

A long priced outsider was taken out and replaced with first reserve, with good form, and subsequently won as second favourite.

Surely my bet was against a field as known at the time of placing the bet, and not against a different field which included a good in form horse?
    Just Wondering.

Something strange about this, and I dont think Ive heard such a rule in 30 years punting.

Arent the reserves usually priced up in the morning prices market, meaning a possible rule 4 if they dont get in?

On the greyhound scene there is certainly no refund when a reserve comes in - but in fairness you wouldnt be taking morning prices on dog races.

Is it possible Gary O'Brien was referring to a voluntary concession of some sort offered by one particular firm?

In greyhounds you back the trap not the dog.

If you want to back the dog you need to be very specific about it, otherwise it's always the trap.

Well, you can do either of course, although 99% of punters will just write down a trap number.

But if you back T3 in the morning and at lunchtime a reserve is put in T6 and beats you, theres no refund - thats the point I was making.

The OPs case may be different in the context of him having taken a morning price - but only i think if the reserves werent priced up, which he hasnt actually confirmed if I understand his posts correctly.

There is no refund as the bet was placed on the trap.

You are not comparing like with like.

    Thanks for your input guys.

Gary O'Brien just e mailed me and confirmed his statement.

He said that in early morning prices, if reserves not definite runners / not priced up, Paddy Powers/Boylesports will treat the reserve as a winner.

However, Ladbrokes,Wm Hill, Victor Chandler,Bet365 will pay the horse second to the reserve as a winner as well as paying out on the reserve.

    I learn something new everyday.

Unfortunately my bet was with PP :(

So, are you saying if I have a morning bet on a named dog - at SP - and a reserve is put in after my bet is struck, that I will be refunded if the reserve wins??

    I cant believe thats correct.

Yes, you would have to consider that a voluntary concession by Ladbrokes etc though wouldnt you, rather than sharp practice by PP/ Boylesports.

Bit of an assumption for GOB to imply the concession is available to everyone including you who backed the second if thats what he did imply.
