    Hi,
Anyone know of a free convertor for this ?

I have downloaded some trial software, but they won't let me convert
one flac to mp3 without buying it ...

    Cheers

VLC media player will do this for you (and it's free!).

Get vlc. File - Convert/Stream select the file you want to convert and then be sure to save it as filename.mp3. In the settings ensure mp3 is selected.

WinFF (GUI for ffmpeg), available as installer or portable. Converts pretty much any media format.

    Free and open source.

I convert flac using lame through Foobar 2000. Works well and its a great audio player too.

I recommend Audacity! It rocks as a free sound recorder too.

As for the quality of the MP3 output, you can easily adjust the quality by editing the presets in WinFF, default MP3 output setting is 160kbs at a constant bit rate (CBR).

Go to EDIT > PRESETS > Category AUDIO > MP3 and edit the entry in the field "Preset Command Line Parameters". (ffmpeg is a command line converter after all)

    Default:
    -acodec libmp3lame -aq 0 -ab 160k -ac 2 -ar 44100

-ab defines the audio bitrate, change it to your likings, -ab 192k, -ab 256k or -ab 320k for maximum quality.

If you want to use a variable bit rate (VBR allows a higher bitrate and therefore more storage space to be allocated to the more complex segments of media files while less space is allocated to less complex segments), use the following parameter:
    -acodec libmp3lame -aq 0 -ac 2 -ar 44100

VBR is defined by -aq (audio quality), possible values are 0 to 255 (weird enough, 0 is the best quality, 255 the lowest)

When done click the button Add/Update and Save.
