Aerlingus: Time Change on Return Booking Help

Booked next month to travel to Amsterdam with Aerlingus a while back I have now realise I might not be able to make the 1.30 outbound flight and want to change to the later one in the evening with the charge of €40 - have discovered that it would be cheaper to make a new booking for the later flight.
Could I do this or would my flight coming back be void?

If I'm reading this right, you want to book the evening flight as a new booking and just use the original booking for the outward leg?

If so, then there's no problem.

Booked return yes just want to change the outward leg later time and leave the flight coming back as originally.
Would this be ok or would I have problems?

I think you may have a problem. If you don't show up for the first outbound flight, your entire journey may be canceled out, including your return journey. If you then show up several hours later and take the evening flight that you booked separately, you'll be able to fly ok. But you will have a problem coming back as your return booking was canceled due to your not showing up for the first leg of the trip. I doubt if their computer systems will have a way of knowing that you in flew later, but on a different flight. I'd contact them ahead of time and ask them what to do to avoid that happening. If you leave it until the day that you are flying it may be too late. They will have already re released your return journey for resale as they'll presume you don't need it.

    Ah!

No, if you don't show up for the original outward flight, they'll cancel the return by default.

So in effect, you'll be as well to just pay the amendment fee to change the booking.
