What a legacy he left though. Remember seeing that documentary he made and whilst not being an expert on Aussie Rules he had a great aura of braveness and courage fighting cancer.

    Rest in Peace Jim.

Horrible news. Truly magnificent player. Saw him play with Melbourne a good few times and I don't think there's ever been a better Irishman to play Aussie Rules.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

A true legend. When I was in Melbourne in 2000/2001 I was taken aback by just how high the natives regarded him. They dont take kindly to foreigners playign their sport anyway so this was all the more remarkable and a testimony to the man

And to think the other well known Irish AFL player from that time, Sean Wight, is also gone at the age of 47

What a man..........if any of us had half the courage, dignity or passion for like as this man we'd be lucky.

    RIP a real hero.

RIP to a great person. may we all have his courage in adversity.

Also remember his former melbourne team mate Sean Wight, a kerryman who went to melbourne in 1982 who died of cancer last year.

2 irish sportsmen who earned the respect of the aussie rules followers.

Anyone find this documentary online? even for purchase? I saw it last year and it has been in my head the past few weeks even before Jim's passing.

    RIP big man.

    RIP Jim.

Its hard for those who are not into AFL or do not know the impact this man has left on Australia. His documentary from 2 years ago brought a spotlight on him for his battle with cancer, but he was so courageous in much more than his battle to the end.

He may have not spent much time on this earth, but his legacy will live on forever. He has left a huge impression on so many people, whther it was through sport or through his battle with cancer, or his Reach program he established. He not only was a legend of AFL and GAA, he was a legend in all walks of life and off the sporting field.

Interesting reading in today's herald that the AFL's equivilant of Eamon Dunphy(cant think what his name is) has been sacked from his job after labelling the late Stynes a ''nasty man''. Just goes to show to in being successful you make enemies as well. Ive no doubt he was tough and uncompromising and would walk through walls to get where he was going. But obviously humane and compassionate too. A true sign of a man and a leader. To think what Dublin GAA missed out on.

Jason N-Akermanis, the AFL equivalent of Joey Barton if you ask me. A mouthpiece, pure and simple.

Jason Akermanis, and the comparison to Joey Barton above is a good one. He is a tool, a mouthpiece, and a media troll. But in fairness to him, he is entitled to his opinion, and his being that he doesnt see why Stynes is deserving of a state funeral over other people who do similar deeds on and off the field. Whilst he may have a point, the timing of it was absolutley horrible, and he has since come out an apologised for it. His comments were taken way out of context too.
In reality, my feelings are quite the opposite and I just didn't express my thoughts, feelings and words very well.
"I hope that you will forgive my stupidity and insensitivity displayed in not expressing my thoughts properly, and therefore my words have been taken out of context."
The Brownlow medallist said he was referring to Stynes' nasty competitive streak, but admitted he probably should have used another word.
A spokesman for the Stynes family said the timing of Akermanis' comments was "appalling."
"Jim was often strong-willed and self-determined ... not nasty, but hard," he said in a statement

"I played against him. He was tough, wiry, angry. You'd love to have him on your team."

his original quiote which the media picked up on was
He lived in Australia for 20-plus years and he was a nasty man in his day. He had a nice turn of phrase and he made sure you knew what he felt.
"He was a legend of the game, he did a great job, he did wonderful things with kids, but there are a bunch of other people who have done just as much and they don't get any recognition.
"I just think it's a bit out of kilter. But that being said he got a state funeral. Do all footballers get state funerals? There's something about it that just made me feel uncomfortable. I thought 'Jim's good but is he that good?'

and whilst I wouldnt agree with him, others would, but the timing is the biggest issue. Stynes was only dead 2 days when Aker came out with this guff. He has been slated throughout Australia as a result, and has lost his radio slot.

Doesn't sound stupid at all mate. It was pretty emotional when it was first aired, it's infinitely more so given what's happened.

just feel sorry for his family his brother brian was absolutely devastated and his poor dad so proud of him etc, i know a guy that played underage club football with him he said he never seen a more naturally gifted athlete..

plus his caring nature with REACH foundation in AUS was amazing he made me feel proud to be irish if you were talkin to AUSSIES they absolutely loved everything he was about..
