Vertical lines in image noise?

    Hey all,

    Took this photograph recently and I'm a tad annoyed with it. It seems to be exhibiting some strange patters in the noise?

    Full size preview here;

    http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/4103/img60651cr2.jpg

    (7D with 24-105 L: ISO 100, 1/60 and f/5.6, 35mm, Image Stabilizer engaged)

    Particularly the shadow area under his head (neck area, where the shirt is open). It looks like I missed the focus on his face and went too far back (ears look in focus) so maybe that could have something to do with it. Looks like lots of vertical lines under his chin area?

    I heard before that the 7D sometimes exhibits a maze-like pattern in it's shadow/highlight areas (the areas with no detail at all) but I've never actually experienced it with my own camera (and this isn't quite the same situation).

    Not sure I've seen this before. Anyone any Ideas? confused.gif

    the image isnt the sharpest to start with

    I looks like you have done some processing to the image. are the lines just reflected lines from the shirt maybe

    although i am not certain it is, that could be an explanation

    edit: actually looking again, they go up onto the face. are they there in the raw file?. for an image at 100 there seems to be a lot of noise

    first look seems to be artefacts from the sharpening, post up an unsharpened version and see what it looks like?

    Here's the RAW opened in Adobe Camera RAW and saved as a JPeg (no other settings changed).

    It's not as noticeable, but it's still there (as I say, I'm aware the shot is slightly out of focus, but I don't know if that's contributed to it?)

    I would say its the just out of focus thats given the effect to the picture

    You missed focus here KKV. His ears are a good indicator of where it landed, or the tractor on the left of the image also looks pretty sharp. But his face/eyes aren't in it. When your shooting this kind of stuff you should come back on the zoom a bit and shoot at much higher fstops like 8 or 9. Then your PP wont require that much and you dont get any anomalies!
