1.4L Ford Focus survey

    Hi folks just wondering if anyone could input anything into this

    I drive a 1.4l 2006 LX focus. Only getting 500km per tank compared to a few friends 600km+ (that's a 2005)

    Can anyone just put up at what revs and/or speed they change from gear to gear? I know it requires a bit of work to concentrate on it but boardsies are nice like that :) it'd be nice to know if I'm driving it harder than most, I would consider if very soft. Changing just past 2000rpm for all gears, might even be a but to early?!

    Also how many kms your getting out of a tank (I run it nearly dry).

    I dont have a focus so cant help you on what a full tank would do. But in general is your car regularly serviced a dirty air filter for example would cause it to use extra petrol.

    No it needs one and is getting one in a week. Can't do it any earlier unfortunately

    Hopefully after the service your MPG will go up. Type of journeys you do will make a difference too for example driving around town uses more than cruising on the motorway. Best thing is compare figures again after the service.

    You only get 500km per tank from the 1.4?! :o

    I'm getting 450km per tank in an ST and that would be considered thirsty by most!

    Where do you do most of your mileage? City, Motorway or back roads? Acceleration will kill fuel economy. At motorway speeds air resistance is the big barrier to economy(since you're already up to speed). Air resistance increases exponentially with speed, so 10kph lower average speed will make a difference, all else being equal.

    What tyres do you have? At the correct pressure? Is your car more heavily loaded?

    You've said you need a new air filter(a full service also?), changing it should help too.

    95% of the time it's just me, them also the OH, very rarely any more. Nothing in the boot really.
    Most driving is short drives generally from Deansgrange to Dun Laoghaire and loughlinstown. Any combination of 2 or 3 of them. Deansgrange to Loughlinstown is up to 80kph and back down a few time due to stops. Very little motorway driving.

    Im doing an oil air and pollen filter plus sparks in a week

    Edit: that's south Dublin suburban driving folks :)

    I get 500 to a tank in my 1.6 cmax and I thought that was thirsty.

    I get just under 500km in my 2006 Focus zetec on a mix of city and motorway driving. Full service one a year, tyres with the correct pressure and no one else in the car.
    I do have a bit of a heavy foot acceleration wise, so I'm happy to be getting nearly 500kms.

    i know someone that recently sold a 2005 focus , cos it was only getting 360miles per tank

    it seems to be the norm with the 1.4 focus

    500km in a 55 litre tank is 25.79 mpg or 9.13 km/liter or 10.9529l/100km

    I dont do mpg calculations for the focus here, buts its an alcoholic.
    40 mile round trip to work and €30 does not do me 3 days atm.

    2005 Focus lx 1.4l, getting around 32 mpg.
    Tested over 2 fills from near empty with mainly town driving plus two 30 minute motorway spins at 110km/hr - 120km/hr. The missus is driving it around town so I don't exactly know how it has been driven, from the rare occasion I'm a passenger she isn't afraid of the boot.

    It is due an oil and fiter change now.

    ok folks i have had the service kit sitting in the hall for a while, and a friend is going to help service it once the rocker seal between gearbox and shaft is done under warranty.

    anyway, i like to think im fairly capable of dismantling and putting back together, as well as logically understanding that the air filter should be somewhere near the air intake :P the OH and a number of friends wouldn't have a clue, and even my knowledge may seem basic to you folks.

    any who, i did the air filter.
    could this have caused excessive fuel consumption?!

    and any idea what that green spongy thing is in the air filter box? looks like it could do with replacing but it didn't come in the kit.

    That green thing is the PCV filter I'm pretty sure. You change the sponge each time you change the air filter.

    Green foamy thing is a kinda filter on the crankcase ventilation - feeds oily vapours in the engine back into the air intake to "protect the environment"
    I'd have no idea really how much gunk would be too much on that, unless twas mouldy altogether.

    Your air filter is pretty gunky! May I suggest changing the cabin air filter while you're at it? That's probably manky too and that air is being consumed by you rather than your engine... if your engine air filter looks like that your cabin filter probably has things growing on it...

    ye odour filter is in the kit in the hall, didn't have time to do it there.
    previous owner was a smoker so id say its horrible if he recirculated air much.

    literally just googling up about that.

    any tips or directions on how to do it?
    and i just read something about if its not done right then you can end up soaking the passenger footwell if it rains?

    take out the glove box seems to be the most recommended way
