Hi i am and living at home desperate to get out and rent somewhere, My job was cut to part time over 2 years ago, and I went JSB Benefit which came to an end last year, and I qualified for the means tested JSA. Would I be entitled to claim any Rent Supplement does anyone know?

Usually u have to be living out of home for 6 months before you qualify for rent allowence, and there is a long waiting list.. Also you are assessed to see if you are in need of rent allowence.. Probably best to go to social welfare information and they will let you know

The rules for Rent Supplement besides the means test are that; you must have been either assessed within the past 12 months by the local authority as been in need of housing and accepted on the housing list. Or have been been renting for 6 out of the previous 12 months and you must have been able to afford the rent when you first started to rent.

www.citizensinformation.ie has all the information you need or drop in to one of the centres. The rules around rent supplement are complicated and the rates vary from county to county and even within some counties so you might be better speaking to someone who can go through your individual circumstances.
