I am with a small branch of opticians for many many years. The service is good but I think they are so expensive and Im finding it difficult to afford their prices anymore. eg. For 3months contact lenses (Johnson & Johnson astigmatism 2weekly lenses) it cost €125 which did not include a sight check or solutions.

Is it possible to ring around opticians and get prices for sight tests and lenses etc?

I have stopped buying contacts in my local optician now. They simply cannot compete with online stores.

I have been using Focus Dailies for many years, and always ordered them as well online. Prices for 30 pair would be of course chepaer, but I have just ordered a brand called Crystal online for £14.50 for 30 pairs!! I havent tested them out yet but if you PM me I will let you know what I think of them when I try them out this week.

    bought them here:

Excellent site and very cheap too, Don't be put off by the .ie, Its actually a German site so you know your not getting ripped off, Very speedy delivery by GLS, that does cost €9 but your still saving as opposed to buying them in Ireland.

I'm only paying €34 including delivery for 6 months supply of monthly lens. They are cheap lens but far more comfortable then any cheap lens sold here.

Long thread here with plenty of recommendations on the cheapest place to buy contacts.

Sorry I should have been clearer. I dont just want a cheap place to buy lenses. I am extremely short-sighted so getting regular sight checks is important to me. So just to re-phrase my query:
    1. Does anyone get sightchecks done with optician and then order lenses online? Does optician bat an eyelid at this?
    2. Can anyone recommend a good and reasonable optician to buy everything with (ie. Not order lenses from another party).
    thanks.

An optician is obliged by law to give you your contact lens prescription if you wish to have a copy. Most opticians will be polite but the reality is they will be disappointed to lose out on the sale and future sales over the year. However it's impossible for a shop to compete with websites as sites can source contacts cheaper than the shops can. The margins are very small with contacts so most opticians will give a professional service with the hope you will buy your glasses from them instead.

Some people don't want to risk laser eye surgery, as well as the side effects which can accompany it, e.g. eye irritations, sunglasses in bright light etc.

I have contacts and refuse to have laser eye surgery because, quite simply, I'm happy with my contacts, they do not inconvenience me and I won't risk the health of my eyes.

I'm in the same boat as you and found the cheaper lenses just not that great so for the last 6 month I've been using: http://www.feelgoodcontacts.com/ and have found them very good in terms of choice and quality

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. You probably want to stay with your Optician, go with their recomendation of Contact Lens, but get them cheaper elsewhere but are afraid if you do you might piss them off.

Not only did I do exactly that, but my Optician is also a friend and even with giving me discount, she just couldn't match the price I could get on the net.

Try this site, I have found them the best value and was using them for years for main brand lenses for myself and the wife.
