Go into the BIOS (F2 at the POST screen) and check if the hard disc drive is detected.

No, not in the boot menu, during the POST screen (Toshiba Logo?) press F2 and you will get into the BIOS, check if the drive is detected and listed there all, before we proceed.

Now, I don't know which BIOS they're using, nothing about it in the user manual either (how ridiculous is that?).

Browse the BIOS for the drives, there should be two SATA drives listed somewhere, the hard disc drive and the optical drive.

    No, it doesn't.

Point is, the error message you're getting indicates that your hard disc is either corrupt or not present at all. So, your first stop is the BIOS to establish whether or not the HDD is detected.

If it is not listed, then it could have slipped out of the connector (not unheard of and fairly easy to fix) or worse, it has gone south and needs to be replaced.

If you have a Windows 7 disc you can boot from DVD, it will tell you soon enough if there's a hard drive or not, If there is, you can do a repair installation.

But as I said, your first stop is normally the BIOS.
