Hi at college we are having a day of the races and I am wondering what would be suitable to wear for a day the races?

Depends on the meet really. At some meets a tie would not be out of place but not necessary either. smart shirt and trousers or cords would do. Stay away from jeans.

    national hunt or flat?
    Flat'd be more "upmarket"

Certain courses'd be more locals than others where anything goes, like say Kilbeggan, where people'd be more dressed up at bigger venues like Fairyhouse or Leopardstown

Can you tell us where/when you're going to the races, OP?

As others have mentioned, it really depends on the day's racing - midweek v weekend; big day's racing or festival meeting v quieter day, etc.

For mid-week and quieter days, you'd get away with a smart coat or jacket and scarf with shoes and a dark pair of jeans (not pale blue) and a jumper and shirt. If you're going to be in a reserved area, then trousers would be expected. For bigger race days, a suit (plus tie) would be recommended.

From what I remember from student race days, it's generally quite laid back as they usually take place on a quieter day's racing.
